Some analysts even going to the extent and suggesting that Al-Qaeda is nearing its end. But certainly that is highly unlikely. Wars and More Wars: The Sorry U.S. History in the Middle East

BY EVE OTTENBERG Photo by Levi Meir Clancy The American republic morphed well over a century ago into an empire of many endless wars. With U.S. troops still in Syria, Iraq, Somalia and numerous African countries, with over 800 military bases in more than 70 countries and a war budget of roughly one trillion dollars a year, it’s no surprise that one of our main exports is weapons and that arms merchants call the shots in Washington. Presidents come and go, but the wars don’t: they drag on. And when a president does manage to extract the country from one of these military quagmires, as Biden did in Afghanistan, he gets nothing but grief. This only serves to encourage barbarity – like freezing Afghanistan’s $7 billion in the bank, while Afghans starve due to the U.S. having...

Survey shows overwhelming majority in Arab countries oppose normalization with ‘Israel’

Press TV A new survey has found that an overwhelming majority of people in Arab countries oppose normalization of relations with Israel, and consider the occupying regime’s policies to be a threat to security and stability of the region. The opinion poll, conducted by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS), indicated that 84% of the participants disapprove any recognition of Israel by their home countries, the Jewish News website reported on Friday. The London-based website went on to say that 36% cited “colonialist occupying power in Palestine” as the main reason for opposing recognition of Israel while 9% cited Israel’s expansionist policies and the intention to dominate more Arab territory as the reason for their opposition. Meanwhile, 8% responded t...

Qassem Soleimani in Venezuela: The lesser known motive behind his assassination

By Hasan Illaik | The Cradle  On 3 January 2020, the US military assassinated Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the elite Quds Force in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), along with his companion, the deputy head of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. Three years later, the motives for this decision – and its timing -are still being debated. The reasons for the US’s shock killing, however, may not be solely related to Soleimani’s role in regional conflicts, but could also arguably stem from his growing international clout. Why was Soleimani assassinated? Soleimani was reportedly responsible for leading Iran’s plan to surround Israel with an arc of missiles and precision drones in the West Asian region – from Le...

Palestinians in Gaza celebrate Moroccan victory over Spain. (Photo: Mahmoud Ajjour, The Palestine Chronicle) By Palestine Chronicle Staff The Moroccan national team, known as the Atlas Lions, made history today when they won against Spain, one of the world’s leading national football teams. Hakim Ziyech and his squad played a mostly defensive game with a strategy that relied mainly on counterattacks. With such international football stars as Ziyech, Achraf Hakimi, and Morocco’s legendary goalkeeper Yassine Bounou (‘Bono’), the Atlas Lions succeeded in reaching the end of the match without conceding any goals, considering that Spain had most of the possession.  It was in the penalty shootout that Moroccan players truly shined. Bounou proved to be one of the bes...

As the World Fixates on Ukraine, Another War is Brewing in the Middle East

BY PATRICK COCKBURN Photograph Source: Darafsh – CC BY-SA 4.0 As war rages in Ukraine, another conflict is ready to explode in the Middle East as the US and its allies confront Iran over its nuclear programme, supply of drones to Russia, and repression of anti-government protests. If the US or Israel were to attack the main Iranian nuclear facility producing weapons-grade nuclear fuel, Iran would most likely retaliate by using its drone and missile arsenal to close the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Gulf, through which tankers daily carry almost a fifth of the world’s oil and gas. The confrontation escalated sharply this week when Iran announced that it intended to make near bomb-grade nuclear fuel at its Fordow plant, located inside a mountain to protect i...

Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, November/December 2022, p. 10-11 Gaza on the Ground By Mohammed Omer HAJJAH AMINAH SMILES widely with a joy that celebrates her 80-odd years. Her demeanor radiates playful sarcasm, inspiring laughter all around her—even in the odd reality that is modern-day Gaza. Kudos to her for her resilience; with an endlessly forward-looking attitude, she believes that every tomorrow will be brighter and each day can bring joy and new opportunities. A father, nearly in his 40s, knits his brow, almost toppled by two toddlers—fighting, as children do, over their turn to play. Hajj...

A Snapshot of Shifting Zionist Propaganda and Myths Over the Years

A Snapshot of Shifting 'Israeli Propaganda and Myths Over the Years JOHN GEEISRAEL PALESTINE POSTED Israel captured around 5,000 Egyptian prisoners during its June 1967 attack on Egypt. Historian Gabi Bron wrote in Israel’s daily newspaper Yediot Ahronot that he witnessed Israeli troops executing Egyptian prisoners on the morning of June 8, 1967, in the Sinai town of al-Arish. As those executions were underway, the most sophisticated intelligence ship in the U.S. Navy, the USS Liberty, was less than 13 miles away—close enough to hear incriminating radio traffic. Liberty survivor James M. Ennes believes Israel may have committed one war crime—attacking a U.S. ship—to hide another that day. Israel’s crippling aerial and naval assault on the Liberty killed 34 crew members, woun...
What exactly did Ayman al-Zawahiri do?

What exactly did Ayman al-Zawahiri do?

Washington’s Assassination Bureau PHILIP GIRALDI  I often complain that Washington’s heavily lopsided relationship with Israel is an arrangement that brings absolutely no benefit to the American people, and even less to our national security as it has involved the US in an endless series of completely avoidable conflicts. But there is one exception to that generalization, though one hesitates to call it a benefit, consisting of the White House’s adoption of the Israel practice of referring to opponents as “terrorists.” Israel uses it as a generic cover designation to denigrate and humiliate the Palestinians while also delegitimizing their resistance, permitting them to torture and kill Arabs at will, destroy their homes, and bomb them mercilessly. Washington, which claims to be ...
