Another US coup topples the elected government of Bangla Desh

Posted by: John Phoenix On 5 August 2024, Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister of Bangla Desh, was forced to flee the country by helicopter at 45 minutes notice owing to escalating violence that threatened her life.  The bourgeois media in imperialist countries enthusiastically welcomed her departure, excoriating her as an autocrat and even a fascist, albeit that she was the elected head of state. The Financial Times joined the media chorus justifying her ouster on the basis that “her rule was marked by increasing authoritarianism, corruption and human rights abuses” (Benjamin Parkin, John Reed and Jyotsna Singh, ‘Bangla Desh prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigns and flees the country’, 5 August 2024), and David Lammy, our new ‘socialist’ Foreign Secretary, has put o...

Change in Bangladesh Perplexes India

Posted by: John Phoenix VT Foreign Policy Writer: Asif Haroon Raja The student uprising against the quota system in Dhaka in July 2024 morphed into a countrywide protest movement within weeks and led to the departure of Hasina Wajid. Since the sudden regime change, the Indian political and military leaders, Indian media, academia and RAW are in a state of acute anxiety, bordering depression. India has suffered two major strategic setbacks this year. The first was BJP’s loss of political power in the June 2024 elections. A bigger jolt came in August when the strongest and most trusted ally Bangladesh (BD) went out of India’s hands because of the sudden fall and exit of Hasina Wajid. She had ruled BD with an iron hand from 2009 to the first week of Aug this year at a stretch...

Factory Fire in Bangladesh Kills Child Labourers

Bangladesh’s economic growth has been branded a miracle in South Asia, growing from one of the poorest countries in the world to one of the fastest developing economies comparable to the ‘Asian Tigers’. Recently the per-capita income of Bangladesh surpassed that of India. Much of this growth has been driven by export in garments. However much of the working class has been deprived off the benefits of its own labour as the recent factory fire in Narayanganj demonstrated. At least 52 children have perished in a fire at the Hashem Food Factory triggering memories of the deadly Rana plaza collapse in 2013. The factory is alleged to have employed children at least as young as 14-years-old. Locals have further alleged that the factory had used padlocks on the floors, which prevented the ...

By Asad Ismi “COVID-19 will be a catastrophe for Bangladeshi garment workers.”  I am speaking with Kalpona Akter, president of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF). It is March 19. Governments around the world have ordered the temporary closure of retail outlets and other businesses, putting millions of people out of work. The shutdown in the West put immediate pressure on global supply chains, in particular for sectors like clothing. “The international brands that source from garment factories in Bangladesh have already started cancelling their orders for clothes. Consequently, Bangladeshi workers are in ve...
