Nazi’s top court says government is not giving Palestinian prisoners enough food

Posted by: John Phoenix  contact@ifamericansknew.org   Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir (C) in Kiryat Malachi, Israel on February 16, 2024 (Mostafa Alkharouf/Anadolu Agency) Justices rule state is legally obliged to ensure ‘basic level of existence’ and orders authorities to improve nutrition Reposted from The Guardian, September 07, 2025 Israel’s supreme court has ruled that the government has failed to provide Palestinian security prisoners with adequate food for basic subsistence and ordered authorities to improve their nutrition. The September 07 decision was a rare case in which the country’s highest court ruled against the government’s conduct during the nearly two-year war. Since the war began, Israel has seized thousands of ...

IRAN – IT’S WAR ! Operation True Promise 4 is under way

Posted by: John Phoenix STOP PRESS The threatened US/Israeli attack against Iran finally began on 28 February, just as LALKAR was prepared to go to press.  Explosions took place in central, northern and eastern Tehran, as well as in Isfahan, Sahand, Karaj, Qom, Kermanshah, Khomein, Dezful, Kharg Island and Minab.  In Minab, two primary schools full of little girls were bombed, leaving over 140 dead. Iranian President, the 86-year old Ali Hosseini Khamenei has been killed, along with members of his family.  US President Trump boasted: “The United States military is undertaking a massive and ongoing operation to prevent this very wicked, radical dictatorship from threatening America and our core national security interests. We are going to destroy their missi...

Stalin’s Library

Posted by: John Phoenix by Geoffrey Roberts – a resumé and review Over the next few issues of LALKAR we shall be publishing this review of Geoffrey Roberts’ book on Stalin’s library.  Although as a bourgeois academic Roberts is obliged to take an anti-communist approach and to repeat may of the usual slanders against Stalin, such as in the sentence; “this book explores the intellectual life and biography of one of history’s bloodiest dictators, Joseph Stalin”  (Introduction, p.2), nevertheless, as an honest historian, he has been able to shed a bright light on Stalin as a person, showcasing not only his genius as a political leader but also his untiring and meticulous devotion to the cause of proletarian revolution and the well-being of the toiling masses.. PART...

OBITUARY- Comrade Sitaram Yechury

Posted by: John Phoenix We at LALKAR are saddened to learn of the sad and premature demise of Comrade Sitaram Yechury who breathed his last on 12 September at the age of 72. General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), he left his mark on not just the CPM but also on the wider Indian political scene.  Besides his leadership role in his party, he was editor of People’s Democracy, CPM’s English language weekly, and a prominent intellectual and thinker. He also edited the CPM’s theoretical journal, Marxism. Sitaram’s radical politics can be traced back to his student days at the Jawahalal Nehru University (JNU) where he studied for his Masters’ degree in Economics, while helping build an impressive left base which continues to this day...

OBITUARY – Hassan Nasrallah

Posted by: John Phoenix The whole of progressive humanity is mourning the death of Hassan Nasrallah, a brilliant and intrepid fighter against imperialism, who led the organisation of which he was General Secretary – Hezbollah – as it stood indomitable and often alone in the Arab world in mounting armed resistance to Israel, the racist colonial state imposed and maintained by Western imperialism on the Middle East. A deeply religious Shia Muslim, Nasrallah first came into politics to struggle against the marginalisation of the Shia community in Lebanon. In the Lebanese civil war between Christian Maronites and Muslims, he joined and fought with Amal (the Movement of the Deprived) that had been founded in 1974 by his mentor Sadr. In 1982 Israel invaded Lebanon with a view t...

OBITUARY – Yahya Sinwar

Posted by: John Phoenix By Scott Ritter, reproduced with thanks Yahya Sinwar was killed fighting Israeli soldiers in the ruins of Gaza. His death will serve as an inspiration for Palestinians for years to come. If there is to be a free and independent Palestine, it will be because of the sacrifice made by Yahya Sinwar in the cause of its creation. He is the true father of Palestine. He was a child of the camps, born into captivity in the Gazan Khan Younis refugee camp, the son of Palestinian citizens of Majdal ‘Asqalan (present-day Ashkelon) who were forcibly driven from their homes by Israeli forces in 1948 in what is referred to as the Nakba, or catastrophe. He was one of the first to join Hamas when it broke away from the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood...

OBITUARY- Ismail Haniyeh (1963-2024)

Posted by: John Phoenix On 31 July 2024 Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, was murdered, along with one of his bodyguards, by Israel by means of a 2 a.m. “airborne guided projectile” strike on a special residence for military veterans in the north of Tehran where he was staying during the inauguration of Iran’s President Pezeshkian.  Haniyeh’s whole life had been dedicated to the struggle of the Palestinian people against the injustice of having their land stolen from them, robbing the vast majority of them also from the life opportunities that they might otherwise have expected to have had. He himself was a son of Palestinians driven out from their home in the coastal city of Ashkelon, in what is now Israel, during the Arab-Israeli war of 1948.  He was born 1...

Argentine politics – lost in the labyrinth

Posted by: John Phoenix To speak of Argentina today is to speak of the implementation of a neoliberal project that continues the economic line drawn by the military dictatorship (1976-1983), the government of Carlos Saul Menem (1989-1999) and the government of Mauricio Macri (1915-1919), with its consequences of external debt, alienation of natural resources to foreign corporations, and the impoverishment of the country’s population. To speak of Argentina is to speak of a real inflation that far exceeds the statistics presented by the government of Javier Milei, that declares an annual inflation rate of 31.4% (Nov-2025), a figure that does not reflect the changes in the consumer habits of most Argentines, where meat, one of the most important items in the Argentine diet, saw...

Á la carte capitalism

Posted by: John Phoenix France’s latest budget drama exposes once again the fantasy at the heart of modern bourgeois rule: the idea that capitalism can be managed à la carte, with its benefits retained and its consequences selectively discarded. Western imperial duplicity and contradiction was perfectly exemplified recently when Donald Trump lauded the pirating of a Venezuelan oil tanker by US forces but paradoxically decried Iranian forces when Iran seized oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz back in 2020. Trump publicly criticised Tehran’s behaviour as destabilising and harmful to global shipping, framing it as evidence of Iran being “nothing but trouble.” Similarly, when France’s Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, declared on December 9 that “making compromise...

Bolivian workers’ thirst for a decent life remains unquenched

Posted by: John Phoenix The portents were ominous following the election in November of a new right-wing president of Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz, and the humiliation of the Movement for Socialism (MAS), which had dominated the country’s political landscape for the past 20 years: “Even before the new president was sworn in, in the House of Deputies the bible and cross were re-instated, even though the constitution defines the plurinational state as secular. The multi-coloured wiphala flag, one of the country’s three official flags, representing indigenous peoples, was removed from outside the presidential palace. Public bodies have replaced the chakana, the Andean cross, on their letterheads with the national shield” (Bolivia Information Forum, Bulletin 63, 1 December 2025). Su...
