Russia’s 1994-96 Campaign for Chechnya: A Failure in Shaping the Battlespace

By Major Norman L. Cooling Reading Time: 53 min  content from Marine Corps Gazette " …the Russians could take the city back. It would take them half a year and they would have to destroy the town all over again. They could even take it in a month, but it would cost ten to fifteen thousand men." — Shamil Basayev, Chechen guerilla leader Near the end of 1994, the Yeltsin Administration, frustrated with the inability to supress the independence movement in Chechnya through covert political efforts, committed military forces to restore the Russian Federation’s authority throughout the region. The Russians originally envisioned this action to be little more than a simple demonstration in the capital city of Grozny, rapidly culminating with the capitulation of the “reb...

According to the sponsor of the bills, Francis-Xavier Sosu of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) party, the law change will lead to a freer and more “open, prosperous, inclusive and secure society” in the country with a population in excess of 32 million people. He added last month that “on death row, prisoners woke up thinking this could be their last day on earth. They were l...

Palestine: London rabbi pays dearly for joining the Nazi occupation

Palestine: London rabbi pays dearly for joining the Israeli occupation Tragic family loss By Stuart Littlewood With Easter came the sad news of more killings in the illegally occupied West Bank, including the shooting of two lovely girls, the daughters of a rabbi from North London whose wife also died as a result of the incident. Reports seem reluctant to explain that the unfortunate rabbi had moved his family to Efrat, an illegal ‘settlement’, and that the transfer by Israel of its own population into so-called settlements on Palestinian territory is considered a violation of the Geneva Conventions and a war crime. “Israeli ‘settlers’ routinely go armed and beat up and murder Palestinians, destroying their crops, wrecking their homes, and generally making their l...
