Barbarism on the Rise: Hunting Mama Wolves and Bears and Their Cubs in Alaska

by EVAGGELOS VALLIANATOS Arctic wolf. Photo: Jeffrey St. Clair. When I was in elementary school, I had a slingshot for hunting birds. To this day, I find it impossible to explain why I indulged in such unsavory behavior. However, since those youthful days, I never hunted again with either a slingshot or a gun. I abhor the killing of wild and domesticated animals. They have as much right as we do to exist without fearing hunters may kill them. I know humans have hunted and killed animals for food. Such open season lasted for millennia. Hunting of wildlife for food is probably still alive in some form or another in most countries of the world. Hunting for sport is another, even more vicious, kind of killing of wild animals. Affluent European hunters decimated Africa’s wildlif...

Living With Global Warming

by MANUEL GARCÍA, JR. I modeled mathematically the thermal imbalance of our biosphere, which we call global warming, so as to gain my own quantitative understanding of the interplay of the two major effects that give rise to this phenomenon. This is a “toy model,” an abstraction of a very complicated planetary phenomenon that teams of scientists using supercomputers have been laboring for decades to enumerate in its many details, and to predict its likely course into the future. The result of my model is a formula for the history of the rise of average global surface temperature. The parameters of the model are ratios of various physical quantities that affect the global heat balance. Many of those physical quantities are set by Nature and the laws of physics. A few of those parame...

Masters of Space: Deep Space Strategy in the Age of Trump

by: KARL GROSSMAN Image Source: United States Space Force – Public Domain The United States “must be capable of winning wars that extend into space,” asserts a just-released “Defense Space Strategy” report. It is the first space strategy document issued by the U.S. since President Donald Trump, after declaring that the U.S. must achieve “dominance in space,” signed a measure this past December authorizing establishment of a Space Force. The U.S. space strategy is highly aggressive. “The Department of Defense is embarking on the most significant transformation in the history of the U.S. national security space program,” the report says. “Space is now a distinct warfighting domain, demanding enterprise-wide-changes to polices, strategies, operations, investments, capabi...

Amazon Rain forest Hit By Killer Droughts

By: ROBERT HUNZIKER Photograph Source: Neil Palmer/CIAT – Flickr – CC BY-SA 2.0 Over the past 20 years, like clockwork, severe droughts have hit the Amazon every five years with regularity 2005, 2010, 2015. Of course, droughts have hit the Amazon rainforest throughout paleoclimate history, but this time it’s different. The frequency and severity is off the charts. Recent data is starting to show 2020 as another dire year. “The old paradigm was that whatever carbon dioxide we put up in [human-caused] emissions, the Amazon would help absorb a major part of it,” according to Sassan Saatchi of NASA’s JPL. (Source: NASA Finds Amazon Drought Leaves Long Legacy of Damage, NASA Earth Science, Aug. 9, 2018) But serious episodes of drought in 2005, 2010 and 2015 are causing research...

‘Six Months To Avert Climate Crisis’: Climate Breakdown And The Corporate Media

In his classic science fiction novel, ‘Foundation’, Isaac Asimov posited a future in which ‘psychohistorians’ could predict outcomes based on past history and the large-scale behaviour of human populations by combining psychology and the mathematics of probability. Using ‘psychohistory’, the protagonist Hari Seldon discovers that the 12,000-year-old Galactic Empire will collapse in 500 years. He warns the galactic rulers of this likely fate, while explaining that an alternative future in which human knowledge is preserved can be attained. For his trouble, he is exiled to the remote planet of Terminus. In today’s world, the prospects for human civilisation, never mind the existence of historians in the future, look bleak indeed. According to many leading climate scientists a...

Global Meat Giants Fuel Major Future Risk of Creating Next Pandemic, Investor Group Warns

"Factory farming is both vulnerable to pandemics and guilty of creating them." by: Andrea Germanos, A piglet looks out from its enclosure. (PhotoKevin/flickr/cc) Global investor network Farm Animal Investment Risk and Return said Wednesday that the novel coronavirus stands to be the "straw that breaks the meat industry's back" as the group released a new report warning that industrial meat production is fueling the risk of future zoonotic pandemics. "Factory farming is both vulnerable to pandemics and guilty of creating them. It's a self-sabotaging cycle that destroys value and risks lives," Farm Animal Investment Risk and Return (FAIRR) founder Jeremy Coller said in a statement launching the new report, Infected Industry. Using criteria including wo...

Jane Goodall Warns Humanity Will Be 'Finished' After Covid-19 Without Ending 'Absolute Disrespect for Animals and the Environment'

"Our disrespect for wild animals and our disrespect for farmed animals has created this situation where disease can spill over to infect human beings." byJessica Corbett, Primatologist and conservationist Jane Goodall particpated in a Tuesday webinar about pandemics, wildlife, and intensive animal farming. (Photo: Compassion in World Farming) In a webinar Tuesday about pandemics, wildlife, and intensive animal farming, world renowned primatologist and conservationist Jane Goodall warned of dire consequences if humanity fails to rapidly reform the global food system and stop destroying natural habitats. "One of the lessons learnt from this crisis is that we must change our ways."—Jane Goodall, primatologist "If we do not do things differently, we are finished," said...

Global Warming is Nuclear War

by MANUEL GARCÍA, JR. Longview, Washington. Photo: Jeffrey St. Clair. The average global surface temperature rose by 1°C during the 110 years between 1910 and 2020. During the 50 years between 1910 and 1960, the average global temperature rose by 0.25°C, an average rate-of-increase of 0.005°C/year. Another 0.25°C of biosphere heating occurred during the 25 years between 1960 and 1985, a rate-of-rise of 0.010°C/year. During the 20 year span between 1985 and 2005 another 0.25°C of temperature was added, a rate-of-rise of 0.0125°C/year. During the 15 year span from 2005 to 2020 another 0.25°C of temperature rise occurred, with an average rate-of-rise of 0.0167°C/year. While the average temperature rise of 0.25°C was the same for each of the four intervals, the first (between 1910 ...

The Way Out of the COVID-19 Crisis Is a Green New Deal

This crisis has reinforced what we already know—our current economic system is leading us down a path of destruction. by: Claire O’Manique Fortunately, we have an alternative to this fossil-fuelled, neoliberal capitalist normal: the Green New Deal. (Photo: Climate Justice Ottawa) Economists are cautioning that the Canadian economy has entered one of the deepest recessions in our history. Our country is not alone in this. The impact of COVID-19 has put the global economy on track for a “new Great Depression.” Will this current crisis exacerbate current inequalities and bring in a new round of violent austerity measures? Or will people power force through a program to reduce inequalities and move us beyond a system that prioritizes profits over all else? Will we move away fr...
