Posted by: John Phoenix At 0600hrs on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 refuse workers employed by Birmingham City Council began an all-out strike. The strike, which is still ongoing at the time of writing this article, is the latest in a series of actions that have taken place in Birmingham since the beginning of the year. The origins of this dispute, which is growing increasingly bitter, can be traced all the way back to 2010, but it came to a head in September 2023, when Birmingham City Council issued a Section 114 notice. This notice, issued under Section 114 of the 1988 Local Government Act, declared the Council’s insolvency and amounted to a de facto declaration of bankruptcy. Whilst the Attlee government did create this entity, it was a tactic to appease working class Brits post WW2 and aimed to prevent the spread of the desire for proletarian revolution from the great Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) to our nation. Any illusions of a Labour administration benignly bestowing goodness or succour to the proletariat must surely have been smashed by the experience of the 21st century.
