What’s in S.3176, the goodies-for-'Israel' bill slinking through Congress?

KATHRYN SHIHADAH  While America grapples with economic devastation, US Congress is expected to pass S.3176, providing $10 million a day in military aid for Israel for the next 10 years. (US media haven’t mentioned it.) On the first day of the 2020 Congressional session, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced S.3176, the “United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act of 2020.” The bill has been making its way steadily through the legislative pipeline. Last Thursday, it passed the Senate Foreign Relations Committee by very questionable methods.  What were the Senators trying to hide? Middle East policy expert Lara Friedman lays out, in language we can understand, the details of this legislation that promises Israel a minimum of $7,000 a minute for the next ten ye...

The Irony of American Freedom

by IPEK S. BURNETT Photograph Source: Becker1999 from Grove City, OH – CC BY 2.0 In “Freedom Is a Constant Struggle,” political activist Angela Y. Davis invokes a song from the Freedom Movement, which says freedom is a constant dying, we’ve died so long we must be free. Davis appreciates this irony: “We’ve struggled so long, we’ve cried so long, we’ve sorrowed so long, we’ve moaned so long, we’ve died so long, we must be free, we must be free. And of course there’s simultaneously resignation and promise in that line, there is critique and inspiration: we must be free, we must be free but are we really free?” Death and freedom, freedom and death, this uncanny coupling is again seen today, in the midst of a global pandemic, on banners, posters, t-shirts&nbs...

National Values: Reality or Propaganda?

By: LAWRENCE DAVIDSON Photograph by Nathaniel St. Clair Joe Biden, presumptive Democratic Party presidential candidate, thinks he knows what American values are. Here are some of them: “inclusivity, tolerance, diversity, respect for the rule of law.” Biden defines these as among the “democratic values that define us.” Actually, what Biden is describing are practices that allegedly reflect American values. And, indeed, these are the sort of practices/values that most U.S. citizens agree are important. Most, but not all—not the 30 to 35 percent of Americans who constitute President Donald Trump’s infamous base. These citizens are typically intolerant and are uncomfortable with diversity. Their notion of inclusiveness does not go much beyond their own perceived community o...

Governments are Using COVID-19 Crisis to Crush Free Speech

by PATRICK COCKBURN Photograph Source: Beatrice Murch – CC BY 2.0 Stop those non-humans who are writing and provoking our people,” says Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov in an Instagram video. The non-humans he objects to are journalists who criticise the Chechen authorities for mishandling their response to the Covid-19 epidemic. Given Kadyrov has faced allegations of torturing and disappearing critics (which the leader denies), he leaves nobody in any doubt about how unwelcome journalistic questions should be dealt with. The cause of his rage was an article in the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta by investigative journalist Elena Milashina, who cited Kadyrov as saying that people who spread the coronavirus are “worse than te...

Welcome to AmeriKKKa! The land of "no black lives matter"

By: Mahmoud El-Yousseph Welcome to AmeriKKKa, the home of the white mass shooters and land of "No black lives matter." We have been taught that America is the land of the free and the home of the brave but I’m having a hard time believing that statement in light of what happened to African-Americans these days. A 46-year-old black man George Floyd died in police custody last Monday in Minneapolis. Four Minneapolis officers involved in the arrest of this innocent man who died in police custody were fired Tuesday. Contrary to police report, a new video footage shed light on the moments leading up to Floyd's arrest, showing two officers manhandling and forcibly removing him him from his car as he is placed in handcuffs. Floyd appears to be complying with officers and not resisting...

Solidarity means insisting on Palestinian right of return

Kristian Davis Bailey  The Electronic Intifada  Murals painted by Palestinian refugees in Lebanon stress their right to go home. (Black for Palestine)  Palestine solidarity activism has made significant gains in the US over the last decade. A national student movement has been built, cross-movement solidarity has been reinvigorated and a series of victories have been achieved in the push for boycott, divestment and sanctions. These victories have ranged from churches and universities supporting BDS measures to the blocking of Israeli cargo ships. For a moment it felt like the Palestine solidarity movement was on the offensive. But Zionist groups and officials fought back through anonymous websites that dox activists, the prolif...

The Murder of Ahmaud Arbery—And Our Continuing Terror

His slaying has become a global embarrassment for whites. But when the camera turns away, the savage injustice that embarrasses us becomes simply business as usual. by: Jesse Jackson People stand six feet apart before participating in a 2.23 mile walk for Ahmaud Arbery on May 8. Arbery was shot and killed while running in Brunswick, Georgia on Feb. 23. (Photo: Nicole Hester/Mlive.com) Today there is a national outcry about the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. The public condemnation has forced a belated response. Those accused of his murder finally have been arrested. His murder has become a global embarrassment for whites. For blacks, however, it is another humiliation, a continuing terror. It is the normal silence, however, that condemns thousands of African Americans to unjus...

Communists and the struggle against imperialism

In the present era of crisis and war, our movement must return to and unite around the profound truths contained within the works of our movement's founders. Proletarian writers Chinese poster from the 1960s reads: 'Long live the victory of the people's war!' The most cursory glance at the contemporary international situation shows that imperialism’s inherent tendency to wage wars of aggression has not in any way disappeared. If anything it has become enhanced, notably after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the socialist countries of central and eastern Europe, since when we have seen numerous wars of colonial reconquest, such as those against Iraq, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and, most recently, Libya. Moreover, faced with what is emerging as the gravest economic crisis in the hi...

“Operation Volute”: Covert UK Propaganda Efforts in Syria May Have Broken UK Law

Internal assessment concluded UK government's covert support of 'moderate opposition' was shallow, lacked coherence and cost lives By Ian Cobain and Alice Ross The UK’s covert propaganda programmes in war-torn Syria were poorly planned, probably illegal and cost lives, according to a scathing internal review of the initiative that has been seen by Middle East Eye. Using news agencies, social media, poster campaigns and even children’s comics, communications companies working under contract to the British government attempted to undermine both the Assad government and the Islamic State group and bolster elements within the Syrian opposition. The UK embarked on its propaganda efforts in the country in 2012 and stepped them up dramatically the following year as the government...
