TikTok and the threat to cultural hegemony

Posted by: John Phoenix A recent article in The Times, entitled ‘Why TikTok ‘makes people more eager to visit China’, worries that “people who spend hours scrolling on TikTok are more likely to want to visit China — possibly because the platform censors material that portrays the country in a negative light”. The article’s author is particularly concerned that TikTok users might “see an airbrushed view of China and its human rights record”. Researchers found that, horrifyingly, users searching on TikTok for terms such as “Tiananmen” or “Tibet” were exposed to a significant number of results that failed to denounce the Communist Party of China. Indeed, it seems that heavy TikTok users typically rate China’s human rights record as “medium”, whereas non-TikTok users rate i...

Trump freezes USAID

Posted by: John Phoenix The liberal media erupted in outrage when President Donald Trump’s new administration announced a funding freeze on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), with some claiming it would result in thousands of government job losses and warnings of global starvation and outbreaks of disease. On the surface, this freeze was portrayed as an abandonment of humanitarian principles, but a deeper analysis reveals the real function of USAID which is not as a benevolent force but an instrument of US imperialism. Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) movement is rooted in a bourgeois nationalist agenda, heavily focused on ending certain foreign spending to prioritise domestic interests. His administration framed the USAID freeze as a co...

Ecuador’s Election – a critical analysis of class interests

Posted by: John Phoenix Perhaps you like to think of yourself as an internationalist, someone who likes to maintain an interest in world events. In pursuit of said stimulation and education you might access traditional Western or Western-backed media outlets such as the Independent, the Times, the Economist, the BBC, the Washington Post et al and you might follow various key influencers on X … Wherever you get your information it will be tainted by the bias of the institution or people who own it, fund it or manipulate it for their own purpose. Everyone has an agenda, a perspective, making it imperative to consider not just what is said but why and whose interests are being served. Being a socialist isn’t simply about aligning with ...

Gaza – the long war for liberation

Posted by: John Phoenix The ceasefire in Gaza marks a humiliating defeat of both the Zionist regime as well as its US and British imperialist masters. The Palestinian people’s steadfast refusal to be expelled from their land and allow the Israelis to carry out their much desired second Nakba must act as an inspiration to those of us in the imperial core nations. For over 15 months the Zionist regime relentlessly bombarded the people of Gaza, destroyed homes and killed hundreds of thousands. For all the horrors that have been inflicted upon them, the people of Gaza continued to resist the Zionist forces and, even though the latter had the full backing of US and British imperialism, the Israeli regime could not beat the resistance. The Israeli regime failed in their stated aims o...

The Congo under fire from M23 stooges

Posted by: John Phoenix The history of the Democratic Republic of Congo since the country was granted its independence has been one of ruthless imposition of neo-colonialism. Traditionally a neo-colonial set-up assumed a bribed native ruling class organising imperialism’s looting of their country in return for imperialism safeguarding their local power.  In Congo this was the case after Congo’s first post-liberation prime minister, Patrice Lumumba, was murdered at the instance of US, French and Belgian imperialism, eventually, after six years of war against Lumumba supporters, being replaced long-term by the renowned kleptocrat, Mobutu. The stability of this system gets upset, however, by the fact that imperialist demands for loot become more and more oppressive.  ...

Hostage Alexander Turbanov released by Hamas

Posted by: John Phoenix Reproduced from Muslim Mirror Desk with thanks February 20, 2025 In a recent development, Israeli-Russian citizen Alexander Turbanov, who was held captive in Gaza for over a year, has been released as part of a prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel. Upon his release, Turbanov made a statement expressing deep appreciation for the treatment he received during his captivity. Turbanov, along with fellow captives Sagui Dekel-Chen and Iair Horn, was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz during the October 7 attack and held in Gaza. Their release was part of a larger exchange in which Israel agreed to free 369 Palestinian prisoners. In a video released by Hamas’ Al-Quds Brigades, Turbanov conveyed his gratitude, stating: “During the 498 days I lived ...

The TUC leader’s endorsement of the Ukraine war is a betrayal of British and Ukrainian workers

Posted by: John Phoenix It is commonly acknowledged across the broad spectrum of opinion that describes itself as ‘left wing’ that the British working class has been under siege by the bourgeoisie for over fifteen years now, since the 2008 economic collapse in fact. The mandarins of the TUC even comment upon this in their usual mournful, faux serious fashion when it comes to conference season. So at a time when wages have seeing real term cuts, unemployment is climbing and the organisational level of the working class remains chronically weak, what do the great and the good of the trade union bureaucracy focus on? Is it on organising industrial action to force the Starmer government to save Grangemouth (Scotland’s only oil refinery) from being closed down by the asset stripper ...

America’s proxy war against Russia has failed

Posted by: John Phoenix With extraordinary speed, Moscow and Washington have agreed to talks about ending the war in Ukraine and fixed on a venue where they will initially take place (Riyadh). There have so far been no invitations issued either to Zelensky or to Europe. By snubbing Zelensky in this way, it is tacitly admitted by the US that the war has never been a war between the Russians and the Ukrainians, but rather an unprovoked proxy war of the US against Russia. And by leaving the EU out in the cold, it is made clear from the outset that Russia has no intention of being led a merry dance the way it was with the Minsk accords, with Angela Merkel laughing up her sleeve throughout the whole performance whilst the murderous shelling of villages in the Donbass continued unaba...

The Hidden Story: Nazi ‘Aid’ Is Part of Genocide Plan

Posted by: John Phoenix 7-year-old Kayyed Al-Nezli’s mother, Sherihan Al-Nezli mourns after Israeli forces conducted an airstrike on the Sabra neighborhood, which resulted in the deaths of several individuals, including children, and left others injured at Al-Shifa Hospital on the second day of Eid al-Adha in Gaza City, Gaza on June 7, 2025. (Dawoud Abo Alkas – Anadolu Agency) Western media struggles to state reality plainly: Palestinians face a grim choice—die of hunger or die trying to get food aid amid deadly distribution attacks, both at the hands of Israel. By Belen Fernandez, Reposted from Fair, June 06, 2025 Israeli tanks opened fire last week on a crowd of thousands of starving Palestinians at an aid distribution center in the ci...
