Stalin’s Library by Geoffrey Roberts – a resumé and review – Part 3

Posted by: John Phoenix The Bolsheviks put a huge premium on education and spreading knowledge among the population.  By 1928, the number of books published in the USSR surpassed the Tsarist peak of 34,000 titles, which was second to Germany’s.  That same year, the Soviet Union printed 270 million copies of books – more than double the rate of Tsarist times. In addition to his own vast collection, Stalin liked to borrow books from other libraries, both personal and institutional – a favourite source being the Lenin Library. Death of Stalin’s wife There is a lot of gossip about Stalin’s family life, but “By all accounts the 1920s were a fairly happy time for the Stalin family”, but the family idyll ended abruptly when Nadezhda (‘Nadya’) Alli-luyeva died i...

Lineker – the price of speaking out

Posted by: John Phoenix Gary Lineker is a man synonymous with English football. Having played at the very highest level, he began his career before the advent of the Premier League with Leicester City in the old First Division. His footballing journey saw him rise to become a star striker and captain of the national team and even ply his talents at the dizzying heights of club football with Spanish giants Barcelona, finally retiring in 1994 after a spell in Japanese football. Even with such a distinguished playing career, Lineker has become a household name as a sports pundit, having hosted Match of the Day for over 25 years, taking over from another iconic presenter, Des Lynam, whom older fans will recall better. It’s a testament to Lineker’s ability as a broadcas...

Birmingham bin workers smelling rats

Posted by: John Phoenix At 0600hrs on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 refuse workers employed by Birmingham City Council began an all-out strike. The strike, which is still ongoing at the time of writing this article, is the latest in a series of actions that have taken place in Birmingham since the beginning of the year. The origins of this dispute, which is growing increasingly bitter, can be traced all the way back to 2010, but it came to a head in September 2023, when Birmingham City Council issued a Section 114 notice. This notice, issued under Section 114 of the 1988 Local Government Act, declared the Council’s insolvency and amounted to a de facto declaration of bankruptcy. At the time of the notice’s issuance by the Council’s financial officer, an £87 million deficit remaine...

Communist Party of Venezuela enters a new stage

Posted by: John Phoenix Anti-imperialist and loyal to the Bolivarian process, the PCV keeps marching forward. The recent history of the Communist Party of Venezuela furnishes further proof that the class struggle must be waged relentlessly on every front, both inside and outside the party. It highlights the necessity of keeping leaders accountable and members engaged with every development of a party’s organisational and political life. And it underscores the need for constant vigilance against opportunist ideas and careerist motivations with which our class enemies constantly try to infiltrate the organisations of the working class – and under conditions of global imperialism, bourgeois ideas cannot but ceaselessly assail the minds of the workers of all nations. The prog...

India-Pakistan-Kashmir – A 78 Year Old Wound

Posted by: John Phoenix The long history of armed clashes between India and Pakistan in the disputed region of Kashmir added another incident to this bloody history in the form of a series of clashes which carried on bwtween 22 April and 10 May this year. The latest flare- up occurred when the group known as the ‘Resistance Front’, an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba, carried out a massacre of Hindu tourists in Pahalgam, in Indian-controlled Kashmir. The Indian government, headed by Narendra Modi of the BJP, immediately accused Pakistan of being complicit in this attack and took a series of actions that led to exchanges of artillery fire and air battles between the Pakistani and Indian air forces. Background The disputed status of Kashmir stems from its incorporation into Indi...

California – Riot and Reaction: a class war by any other name

Posted by: John Phoenix In early June 2025, a series of state-led immigration raids triggered widespread protests and clashes in Los Angeles and other US cities. Federal agents from ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raided a warehouse complex in the Fashion District and several Home Depot parking lots in Southern California. Over 260 undocumented workers were detained, prompting immediate resistance from surrounding communities. By June 5th, demonstrations had erupted in downtown LA, with solidarity marches in Chicago, New York, and Houston. According to local reports, more than 70 protesters were injured and nearly 150 arrested. Video footage circulated widely on social media showed police using tear gas, rubber bullets, and kettling tactics against demonstrators. C...

China’s progress shows socialism is the only viable political framework for saving the planet

Posted by: John Phoenix by Carlos Martinez It was reported in late June 2025 that China has reached a historic milestone in its energy transition: the country’s cumulative installed solar capacity has surpassed 1 terawatt (TW). This represents approximately 45 percent of the global total, and is several times higher than the figure for the US (177 gigawatts (GW)) and the European Union (269 GW). According to the latest figures released by China’s National Energy Administration (NEA), the nation’s total installed capacity of wind and solar photovoltaic power has reached 1.5 TW, outstripping thermal power for the first time. This achievement solidifies China’s status as the world’s only renewable energy superpower, and reflects its firm commitment to phasing out its use of ...

Salute to the heroic people of Gaza and their continuous resistance to murderous infamy

Posted By: John Phoenix While the focus of world attention has turned away from Gaza to the attack by Israel on Iran and Iran’s determined and powerful response, there is still no let-up in Israel’s war on Gaza or in the Palestinian resistance. Israel continues to perpetrate barbarities Between January and May 2025, the World Health Organisation documented 76 attacks on healthcare facilities in Gaza, reflecting severe threats to medical infrastructure. The number of functional hospitals decreased from 20 to 17 between May 24 and June 11, with some, including Al-Awda, Jabalia and Haifa hospitals, becoming non-operational owing to intensified fighting and insecurity. Community-level medical points (GP polyclinics, essentially) also declined from 144 to 126, and all hospital...

The illegal and immoral war against Iran

Posted by: John Phoenix Every day it’s a-getting closer Moving faster than a roller coaster. The third world war will surely come our way (apologies to Buddy Holly) “Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu aims to overthrow Iran’s clerical-military regime and talks openly of liquidating the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This is a fight to the death. “There is a very high risk that the US, Britain, and France will be drawn directly into the conflict – pitting the democracies against the coalescing confederacy of Iran, China, Russia and North Korea, and its disturbingly large tail of semi-aligned states. “The hybrid struggle between two rival blocs resembles the treacherous landscape before the Thirty Years War in 1618, and the First World War in 1914. All it ta...

With 60,000+ Dead, US Public Support for Nazi’s Annihilation of Gaza Hits New Low

Relatives mourn over the wrapped bodies of victims at Al-Awda Hospital following an Israeli airstrike targeting a residential area in Nuseirat Refugee Camp, central Gaza, on July 29, 2025. The attack results in dozens of casualties, including 14 children and 12 women.  (Photo: Hassan Jedi/Anadolu via Getty Images) Posted by: John Phoenix Just 32% of respondents—including only 8% of Democrats—said they backed 'Israel' in a new Gallup poll. As the Palestinian death toll from Israel's obliteration of Gaza officially topped 60,000—likely a significant undercount—a Gallup poll released Tuesday revealed that U.S. public support for Israel's war on the Palestinian enclave plummeted to an all-time low, even before the widespread publication of horrifying images of G...
