NOVANEWS The glories of New Labour (who liked some torture after supper) Published on 23 September 2010 in General. 0 Comments Tags: Britain, torture, war on terror. Oh my: David Miliband gave MI6 the green light to proceed with intelligence-gathering operations in countries where there was a possible risk of terrorism suspects being tortured, the Guardian has learned. During the three years Miliband served as foreign secretary, MI6 always consulted him personally before embarking on what a source described as “any particularly difficult” attempts to gain information from a detainee held by a country with a poor human rights record. While Miliband blocked some operations, he is known to have given permission for others to proceed. Officers from MI5 are understood to have sought simila...

WHAT'S REALLY BEHIND THE U.S.-SAUDI MILITARY ALLIANCE

NOVANEWS The Permanent War Economy: What’s Really Behind the U.S.-Saudi Military Alliance September 22, 2010 by Michael Leon     Saudi security forces on parade. Photo - Al Jazeera - The historic $60 billion military “aid” package between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia is a classic example of the dangers of the American war machine - By: Anthony DiMaggio in FireDogLake The historic $60 billion military “aid” package between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia is a classic example of the dangers of the American war machine. Al Jazeera reports that it represents the “largest ever U.S. deal to sell advanced fighter jets to Saudi Arabia.” The deal speaks to the vital role of U.S. imperial planers in committing massive resources to entrenched oil oligarchies in the Middle East. As is well known, these regim...

INSIDE GAZA

NOVANEWS I was born into occupation. I was born in Palestine. My father was a member the P.L.O. (Palestinian Liberation Organization) and my mother always supported him. I was very lucky to have such rebellious father and patient mother. When I think back to my childhood I always count myself as blessed to have had an opportunity to stay in Germany with some other children in 1990, three years after the onset of the First Intifada. The Palestinian children who went to Germany grew up under Israeli Tyranny and some of them suffered much more than I, having lost their parents, not to mention having been injured during warfare, losing their site or their arms or legs in explosions. The trip to Germany was a great chance for us to open our eyes to the world around us and escape the Ghetto that...

NOVANEWS Dear Friends, Of the 5 items tonight, the first 2 offer positive news, the 3rd is brief but not positive, the 4th and 5th may be true, but although I have no way of corroborating them (I searched British and American media as well as Israeli but found nothing more than the two), number 4 is not so surprising as it seems at first glance, and 5 puts a new slant on things.  Item 1 relates that Holland, upon learning that Israeli mayors of West Bank colonies would be among the mayors attending the event, has cancelled an Israeli mayors tour.  Good news.  Things are changing—not as rapidly as we’d like, but changing nevertheless. Item 2 reports that the Jewish ship to Gaza is ready to set sail, but gives no dates.  It would not surprise me if Israel would opt to sink the boat before it...
