NOVANEWS Dear All, This message contains but 2 items—both about the Rachel Corrie trial session yesterday.  I’ve read about a dozen reports (Haaretz, Ynet, Guardian, LA Times, NY Times, e.g).  The 2 below are, I believe, the most thorough and revealing. The Al Jazeera report is more a reaction of the journalist to the trial (as the title suggests), but I learned from it why there was no room for myself and my spouse.  Well, actually the fact that the defense filled the room with its observers is only part of the reason.  The room for the trial is one of the smallest ones in the building, with 2 rows, each seats about 15 people.  Undoubtedly, whoever assigned the room knew that this would be a trial that would draw numerous media people, friends of the Corries, and general well wishers.  Th...

NOVANEWS Dear Friends, Just 2 items this evening.  The first is shocking, but was to have been expected following the loyalty oath bill: Gideon Saar wishes to ban East Jerusalem Arabs from being tourist guides—why?  They are not sufficiently Zionist to hard-sell Israel’s (biblical and more recent) past and present to tourists.  Just to remind us where we are headed for, I precede the news report on MK Saar’s endeavors (backed by 7 additional MKs) with some Nuremberg Laws.  From Saar’s bill to denying Arabs the right to lecture in Israeli institutions of higher learning, from being students in the same, from living in Jewish neighborhoods, from intermarrying with Jews, and all the like is just a step or half-step away. We are not only moving in the direction of Nuremberg—Israel’s leaders ...

NOVANEWS Dear Friends, First off, an apology.  I got my Gideons mixed up yesterday.  The person initiating the law to prohibit East Jerusalem Palestinians from being tourist guides is Gideon Ezra, not Gideon Saar.  The two are much alike in their thinking and policies, but are nevertheless 2 different persons.  Sorry. Below are 2 reports, 3 partial reports, and one item consisting of 2 brief letters—6 items all told.  The abbreviated items contain the links, should you wish to read the whole. I find the initial item very disturbing.  Several years back (in 2006) the then Israeli Minister of Education, Yuli Tamir, expressed her intention to reinstate the ‘green line’ (the 1949 armistice line) on maps in textbooks. Her proposal caused such a ruckus in the Knesset that she had to back do...

THE TRUE SIGNIFICANCE OF AHMADINEJAD'S LEBANON VISIT

NOVANEWS October 20, 2010 by Debbie Menon  By Alistair Crooke  ( Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran ) Our friend and colleague, Alastair Crooke, founder and director of the Beirut-based Conflicts Forum, has written the following post about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to Lebanon.  We heartily commend it to our readers’ attention. –Flynt Leverett and Hillary Mann Leverett Firstly, let us put to one side the nonsense: The President of Iran’s visit was not about embedding Lebanon as a part of the Iranian state, nor was it about paving the way for any Hizbullah ‘take-over’ of Lebanon; and nor can the visit be described as a ‘provocation’. It was of course self-evidently intended to express defiance towards Israeli military hegemony and to assert a ...
