Secret Footage of ExxonMobil Lobbyists Sparks Calls for Congressional Action

Unearthed, Greenpeace U.K.'s investigative journalism arm, has released secretly recorded footage of Keith McCoy, a senior director in ExxonMobil's Washington, D.C. government affairs team. BYJessica Corbett, Common Dreams While ExxonMobil’s decades of sowing public doubt about climate science and the impact of fossil fuels have provoked various lawsuits, secretly recorded videos released Wednesday expose how the company continues to fight against U.S. efforts to tackle climate emergency. Published by Unearthed, Greenpeace U.K.’s investigative journalism arm, and the British Channel 4 News, the footage of ExxonMobil lobbyists sparked new calls for congressional action to hold the oil and gas giant accountable. The videos, obtained by Unearthed&nbs...

Lethal Heat Hits the Planet

BY ROBERT HUNZIKER Photograph Source: Bill Smith – CC BY 2.0 The news does not get much worse than a recent scientific report that the planet is trapping twice as much heat as it did only 14 years ago. If this one report does not turn heads and create a sense of panic to get off fossil fuels, as soon as yesterday, then nothing will ever move the needle to fix the planet’s broken climate system. (Source: Norman G. Loeb, et al, Satellite and Ocean Data Reveal Marked Increase in Earth’s Heating Rate, Geophysical Research Letters – Advanced Earth and Space Science, June 15, 2021) Scientists have been warning about the consequences of human-generated greenhouse gases ever since James Hansen testified before a Congressional committee 33 years ago: “The greenhouse effect has...

‘Recycling’ today: greenwashing for a broken, ecocidal system

Why does our society seem so incapable of dealing with the rising tide of plastic that threatens to overwhelm us? Proletarian writers The capitalist system – incapable of long-term thinking or rational planning – presses the responsibility for useless ‘recycling’ onto working people, whilst the mountains of trash generated by companies like Amazon is pushed onto the developing world. Sustainable capitalism is a dangerous myth: we have be red to be green! A century and a half ago, the great founding father of Marxist science Friedrich Engels pointed out that the capitalist class is “a class under whose leadership society is racing to ruin like a locomotive whose jammed safety-valve the driver is too weak to open”. (Anti-Dühring, Chapter 13, 1877) A recent exposé ...

Biden’s Climate Plan: It’s Too Late for Gradualism

BY HOWIE HAWKINS Photograph by Nathaniel St. Clair President Biden gave us his climate plan on March 31. It was buried inside his American Jobs Plan. The 12,000-word Fact Sheet about it released by the White House hardly acknowledges the climate emergency. The plan is presented as a jobs through infrastructure program. The climate emergency demands a radical and rapid decarbonization of the economy with numerical goals and timetables to transform all productive sectors, not only power production (27% of carbon emissions), but also transportation (28%), manufacturing (22%), buildings (12%), and agriculture (10%). That emergency transformation can only be met by an ecosocialist approach using public enterprise and planning. Instead, Biden’s plan emphasizes cor...

‘People’s Earth Day’ rally in San Francisco highlights local history of environmental racism

Nancy Robles Download PDF flyer Photo: Banner reads “We can’t breathe! Stop environmental racism.” Liberation photo On April 22 a People’s Earth Day’ rally was held in front of San Francisco City Hall to demand health and environmental justice for residents of Bayview Hunters Point and Treasure Island. The Hunters Point Shipyard in the Bayview district is a federal Superfund site; one of many polluted locations in the United States requiring a long-term response to clean up hazardous material contaminations. Dr. Ahimsa Sumchai from the Hunters Point Community Biomonitoring Project explained to an attentive crowd how clusters of people have been identified with the same toxins in their urine including arsenic, magnesium, vanadium and gadolinium. The statistical likelihood t...

Three Mile Island, Global Warming and the CIA

By Aletho News  This article examines some of the connections between the US and UK National Security apparatus and the appearance of the anthropogenic global warming (AGW) theory beginning after the accident at Three Mile Island. In the mid 1970s “climate cooling” was the topic of articles in popular magazines such as Newsweek with reports of meteorologists being “almost unanimous” that the trend could lead to catastrophic famines, another little ice age or worse. In 1974 Time magazine published an article titled “Another Ice Age?.” In 1975 the New York Times ran an article titled “Scientists Ponder Why World’s Climate Is Changing; a Major Cooling Widely Considered to Be Inevitable,” while in 1978 they reported that “an international...

DOJ & EPA to get ‘Climate Justice’ offices under Biden’s executive orders

As part of a sweeping executive order signed on Wednesday, the new or expanded “climate justice” offices will be established at the Department of Justice (DOJ), Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). “We know the communities who are being hurt, and we know we have to start enforcing the standards today in ensuring that they are part of the solution,” Gi...

The Damage Done

BY GEORGE OCHENSKI Being home to the largest Superfund site in the nation, Montanans know that the cost of trying to clean up an environment damaged by resource extraction is vastly higher than the cost of preventing the damage in the first place. We also know that after spending hundreds of millions of dollars and decades of effort, “remediation” of functioning ecosystems is never fully restored. It’s a lesson our lawmakers should heed – and remember that Donald Trump’s regulatory rollbacks and the damage done – helped make him a one-term president. For the last four years the Trump administration has been on a tear – literally, that is, tearing up the environmental regulations put in place over half a century after the nation realized we would not survive a future where our river...
