The vessel is owned by the Turkis...

Murder on the Beach: British-backed Wars Helped Create Tunisian Killer

NOVANEWS British foreign policy has partly helped turn Libya and Syria into training and facilitation hubs for militants who conducted numerous atrocities across Europe By Mark Curtis Middle East Eye   Note to readers: please click the share buttons above   Three years ago on 26 June, a 23-year-old Tunisian armed with a machine gun mowed down 38 tourists at a beach hotel in the resort of Port El Kantaoui. Thirty British tourists were among the dead in the worst attack on Britons since the July 2005 London bombings and Tunisia’s deadliest attack ever. The atrocity was perpetrated by an adherent of the Islamic State (IS) group, which claimed responsibility. But, in a broader context, it is another instance of terrorism arising partly from UK foreign policies for which British gov...

Elections alone do not make for democracy

NOVANEWS by Thierry Meyssan Seen from the West, three democratic elections have just been held in Tunisia, Lebanon and Iraq. But for the People of these nations, the votes had little to do with the democratic ideal, because the institutions that were imposed upon them by the West were designed to prevent them from having a free choice of their leaders. The massive abstention during the Lebanese and Iraqi general elections (50 % Lebanon), (65 % Iraq), and the Tunisian municipal elections (77 %) was interpreted by the Western powers as proof of the immaturity of these populations. No matter whether or not they have been democracies for 7 or 75 years, they are irresponsible and must therefore be placed under supervision. Forgetting the fact that in the West also, certain nati...

Tunisia: “What are we waiting for?

NOVANEWS A new campaign to reject the austerity policies of the ruling coalition The announcement of the entry into force of some measures provided for by the finance law that has just been adopted by the Tunisian parliament with a reactionary majority triggered a wave of protest throughout the country. Even before its presentation in parliament and when it was discussed behind closed doors in specialized committees, the Popular Front, which was constitutionally the chair of the Finance Committee, warned publicly against the anti-people measures it contained and had no purpose other than to place the burden of the crisis on the working classes. In November, through the massive distribution of leaflets and the holding of meetings and rallies throughout the country, the leaders of the Fr...

Canada enables Barrick’s bad corporate behaviour

NOVANEWS By Yves Engler  Will the Canadian government continue to support Barrick Gold’s exploitation of mineral resources in Tanzania no matter what abuses the company commits? Would the Trudeau government stop backing the Toronto-based firm if it bilked the impoverished nation out of $10 billion? Or, what if one thousand people were raped and seriously injured by Barrick security? Would Ottawa withdraw its support if one hundred Tanzanians were killed at its mines? Barrick’s African subsidiary, Acacia Mining, is embroiled in a major political conflict in the east African nation. With growing evidence of its failure to pay royalties and tax, Acacia has been condemned by the president, had its exports restricted and slapped with a massive tax bill. In May a government panel concluded t...

Tunisia Reveals How the US-Supported Insurgents in Syria are Sexually Exploiting Girls

NOVANEWS By Mariem Karoui Global Research A gut wrenching article appeared today in the Tunisian newspaper, Al Chourouk. The article highlighted the return of a hundred Tunisian girls from Syria, girls who offered sexual services under the pretext of marriage (Nikah is Marriage in Arabic) for the insurgency warlords. This startling phenomenon raises a number of questions for Tunisia’s conservative society. What civil status would be attributed to these women and their newborn babies? Will they be considered as divorced women, widows, or single mothers? What will the city hall’s employee write in the father name column? What future will these innocent kids have: delinquency, criminality, or prostitution? More concerning, a majority of these women are now menaced by the threat of  ho...

Tunisians Ask Gov’t to Withdraw from Saudi Coalition over Blacklisting Hezbollah

NOVANEWS The leader of En-Nahda Islamic movement  in Tunisia Rached Ghannouchi asserted on Saturday that it is impossible to label Hezbollah as a terrorist group because of the his historic achievements in liberating Lebanon and protecting it from the Zionist aggressions. Although Hezbollah's role in Syria is controversial, we cannot generalize any label against the party, Ghannouchi added. Meanwhile, a number of political parties in Tunisia demanded that the government withdraw from the Saudi Zio-Wahhabi led coalition in the region over the decision to blacklist Hezbollah. In Egypt, the founder of the Popular Current Hamdeen Sabahi greeted Hezbollah and his Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah for  confronting the Zionist occupation, noting that who has blacklisted the...
