Jerusalem: The Red Line for Muslims

NOVANEWS By Gulam Asgar Mitha Oriental Review   To Netanyahu it is Yerushalayim (city of peace) in Yiddish; to Muslims it is Bayt Al-Maqdis (the house of peace). To Google and now to Trump Jerusalem (city of peace) is the capital of Israel. On December 7, 2017 Yeni Safak, a conservative Turkish daily newspaper and strong supporter of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reported Erdoğan as saying that Trump’s Jerusalem step ‘will throw the region into a ring of fire’, ‘Trump’s declaration aims to stir up the region, not to bring peace,’ and that “Jerusalem, Mr. Trump, is the red line for Muslims”. Watch: Jerusalem, “The Flower of Cities”

NOVANEWS Nureddin Sabir, Editor, Redress Information & Analysis, writes: This beautiful song by Lebanese singer Fairuz encapsulates the beautiful city of Jerusalem, occupied by the Israelis, an occupation that has just been endorsed by Donald Trump. Jerusalem is an Arab, Muslim-Christian city and will remain thus, whatever Trump and his like say. Everything comes to an end, and one day the Israeli occupation will also collapse, despite the disaster sweeping the Arab world thanks to the Muslim Brotherhood and its offspring – Islamic State group, Al-Qaeda and their countless offishoots and clones. The song is in Arabic but you should enjoy it even if you do not understand Arabic.

The Jerusalem Fellah: Popular Politics in Mandate-Era Palestine

NOVANEWS Rana Barakat Journal of Palestine Studies, Vol. 46 No. 1, Autumn 2016 Abstract The British Mandate in Palestine was a time of significant change for the social character and demographic feel of Jerusalem. As it grew into a colonial capital and expanding cosmopolitan city, the city became home to a large number of non-elite Arab Palestinians, specifically the fellahin from the villages of the western corridor, who became central to Jerusalem’s social, political, and economic life. A great deal has been written about Jerusalem’s traditional families and their role in the development of the city as a national Palestinian capital, but not much is known about the contributions of Jerusalem’s Arab residents beyond those families. In seeki...
