ED MILIBAND IS ROLLING OVER ON CUTS ALREADY

NOVANEWS October 2nd, 2010 • Related • Filed Under Filed Under: Britain • Featured • Labour Party • Most read articles • Statements The positive outcome of the Labour leadership contest is that the new leader is not David Miliband, and the privatising, war supporting Blairites have been rejected. We should not underestimate the discarding of Blairism and New Labour by important sections of the labour movement. The Blairites tasted another major defeat the day before when Ken Livingstone won a crushing victory over Oona King to become Labour’s candidate for Mayor of London. However as we argue in this statement from Socialist Resistance Ed Miliband is only marginally different to his right-wing brother David. Ed Miliband in his maiden speech at Conference said that the Iraq war was wrong, ...

SAY NO TO FREEMASON SCHOOLS ACADEMIE'S

NOVANEWS     Will ‘Free’ schools use qualified teachers? There is growing concern that ‘Free’ Schools will try emulate their private school friends and avoid employing trained teachers. Alasdair Smith, of the Anti Academies Alliance, thinks the government could be on dodgy ground. "I think these ministers have got the idea from their old private schools, where anyone can teach, without a formal qualification, but state-funded schools are different. The idea that free schools might not use qualified teachers would be very worrying for most parents because QTS is evidence that the teacher understands how to provide quality teaching and learning.” Free schools might not use qualified teachers http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2010/sep/28/free-schools-trained-teac...

OSBORNE: CRACK DOWN ON TAX CHEATS ?

NOVANEWS Dear, Thousands of us have decided what 38 Degrees should do as the government plans cuts. Together we're going to push them to crack down on the billions we lose from tax dodgers every year. Right now Chancellor George Osborne is deciding what he'll cut. We're all going to be hit by the VAT rise in January and less money for services like schools, hospitals and the police. [1] Every year a selfish few rip us off by dodging billions in tax. It's a big problem - the government says every year we lose at least £42 billion in "uncollected" tax. [2] The government needs to stand up to tax cheats and make sure everybody, including billionaires, bankers and media moguls, pays their fair share.  So here's the plan. This week we're launching our "Crack Down on Tax Dodgers" petition to pil...

LETTERS TO THE GUARDIAN

NOVANEWS The Guardian, 30 September 2010 [from Letters] • Mordechai Vanunu has been held in Israel, in and out of prison, for 24 years. Since his release from Ashkelon prison in 2004, where he spent 18 years, over 11 of them in solitary confinement, he has been subjected to repressive restrictions and constant harassment and numerous arrests. Despite this ongoing, oppressive treatment Mordechai has remained resilient and determined to survive. Now, as an example of his courage and resolve, he wants to mark the date of his brutal kidnapping by Mossad agents, from Rome, exactly 24 years ago today. Mordechai is asking all his sympathisers and supporters who are on Facebook to write on their pages as well as communicate worldwide a call for "Freedom for Vanunu, now". Mordechai should be allowe...

RESPECT & RACISM

NOVANEWS  September 29, 2010 I don't much followed the antics of the Respect political party in Britain, but even I was surprised that one of its senior members would indulge in such conspicuous racism, anti-Jewish racism that is. Respect had no choice but to expel him, I imagine his views are only the tip of the iceberg as Dave Hill reports: "On Monday he re-published some banter that took place on Facebook between a senior figure in Respect called Abul Hussain and others. Respect's leadership responded by expelling Hussain. Their grounds? We are extremely upset to discover that recently published comments from one of our party members are indicative of anti-Semitism. The National Officers have conducted an investigation and met on Monday evening (27 September) to consider the matter. We ...
