US govt’s Summit of the Americas fails: Boycott by presidents of Mexico, Bolivia, Honduras, Guatemala

As the US government’s Summit of the Americas opens in Los Angeles, California, the presidents of Mexico, Bolivia, Honduras, and Guatemala have refused to attend, protesting the exclusion of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. ByBenjamin Norton The US government’s Summit of the Americas started on June 6 in Los Angeles, California. And the event proved to be a major diplomatic failure for the Joe Biden administration. Washington refused to invite the socialist governments of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. So to protest this exclusion, the presidents of Mexico, Bolivia, and Honduras boycotted the summit. Guatemala’s president also chose to skip the conference. This means heads of state representing Latin American countries with a total population of more than 200 million pe...

In fiery UN speech, Honduras condemns colonialism, neoliberalism, coups, corporate exploitation

Posted by: John Phoenix In her first UN speech, Honduras’ left-wing President Xiomara Castro denounced colonialism, “neoliberal injustice,” and the foreign corporations that have exploited her country. Calling for multipolarity, she declared, “Never again will we carry the stereotype of a banana republic.” By: Benjamin Norton Xiomara Castro (Se puede leer esta nota en español aquí.) Honduras’ new left-wing President Xiomara Castro delivered a fiery speech at the United Nations General Assembly denouncing colonialism, “neoliberal injustice,” and the foreign corporations that have exploited her country. Why Xiomara Castro’s Win In Honduras Could Address The Country’s Endemic Corruption And Violence

Article: Independent Media Institute After more than a decade of violent repression and undemocratic rule that emerged after the 2009 ouster of Manuel Zelaya, a new leader takes the reins of the Central American nation. “I am overwhelmed with joy; I just cannot believe it,” says Dr. Oriel María Siu speaking to me from the city of San Pedro Sula the day after Hondurans like herself voted in presidential elections. Siu was ecstatic to learn that Xiomara Castro de Zelaya had an insurmountable lead over Nasry Asfura, the candidate representing the incumbent conservative party. Castro, the wife of ousted former president Manuel Zelaya, is a democratic socialist and will become the first woman president of Honduras. She triumphantly told her supporters, “Today...

Honduras: Left wins landslide election victory after 12 years of resistance

Brianna Griffith Download PDF flyer Celebrations erupted the night of November 28 as leftist candidate Xiomara Castro took a commanding lead over Nasry Asfura of the right-wing National Party. Fireworks were set off outside the headquarters of Castro’s Liberty and Refoundation Party (LIBRE) as supporters sang. In contrast, the ruling National Party’s headquarters was reported to be completely empty. Castro’s landslide victory signals the end of the National Party’s 12-year grip on power, which began in a 2009 military coup that ousted Castro’s husband, Manuel Zelaya. This coup, supported by the Obama administration, ushered in a regime led first by Porfirio Lobo, and since 2014 by the notoriously corrupt Juan Orlando Hernández. Castro was elected on a campaign to undo the ...

Her term begins in January, 2022; she replaces two-term president Juan Orlando Hernández, who with ex-President Porfirio Lobo (2010-2014), account for 12 years of National Party rule following the June 2009 military coup that removed progressive President Manuel Zelaya.  He is Xiomara Castro’s husband. With a 70 percent voter turnout, Castro accumulated almost 54 percent of the total, leaving National Party candidate Nasry Asfura with 34 percent of the vote, followed by Liberal Party candidate Yani Rosenthal with 9.2 percent; 13 other political parties tog...

A letter in support of the National Movement Against ZEDEs and in favour of Honduras Sovereignty

From the Honduras Solidarity Network To Juan Orlando Hernandez, President of Honduras During the past few months, the Employment and Economic Development Zones (ZEDEs), also known as ‘private cities’, ‘charter cities’ or ‘model cities’, have been rejected overwhelmingly in Honduras almost a decade since the first protests against them in 2011 when they were introduced as Special Development Zones. Now there are four ZEDE projects advancing politically, fiscally and legally in Honduras. These include: ZEDE ‘Honduras Próspera’ (in the community of  Crawfish Rock, Roatán); ZEDE ‘Ciudad Morazán’ (Choloma, Atlántida); ZEDE ‘Orquidea’ (San Marcos de Colón, Choluteca) y ZEDE ‘Mariposa’ (location not yet determined). The Organic Law for ZEDEs (Legislative Decree 120-2013) wa...

US Intervention and Capitalism Have Created a Monster in Honduras

BY W. T. WHITNEY Photograph Source: Fibonacci Blue – CC BY 2.0 Chilean author and human rights advocate Ariel Dorfman recently memorialized Orlando Letelier, President Allende’s foreign minister. Agents of dictator Augusto Pinochet murdered Letelier in Washington in 1976. Dorfman noted that Chile and the United States were “on excellent, indeed obscenely excellent, terms (like they are today, shamefully, between the United States and the corrupt regime in Honduras).” The Honduran government headed by president Juan Orlando Hernández does have excellent relations with the United States. The alliance is toxic, however, what with the continued hold of capitalism on an already unjust, dysfunctional society. Hondurans will choose a new president on November 28....

Trump ends TPS for Hondurans fleeing U.S.-backed violence and dictatorship

Nicole Roussell Download PDF flyer Last Friday, Donald Trump eliminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Hondurans in the United States, sending into crisis at least 57,000 Hondurans living here in the United States, some since the 1990s. TPS for Hondurans was initially instituted due to Hurricane Mitch, which killed 7,000 Hondurans in 1998. This is one decision in a long line of repression against immigrants who have lived here for years: the Trump administration has already eliminated TPS for Salvadorans, Nepalis, Haitians, Nicaraguans, Sudanese, and Liberians, with immigrants from just six countries remaining eligible for this status. Immigration advocates estimate at least 57,000 Hondurans will lose legal status and will be eligible for deportation at any time. These ar...
