Globalizing the War on Indigenous People: Bolsonaro and Modi

by JESS FRANKLIN Photo: G. Miranda, FUNAI, Survival International. A man who has repeatedly romanticized dictatorship and advocated the use of torture seems like an odd choice for guest of honor at the annual celebration of the constitution in the biggest democracy in the world. However, it makes perfect sense that Brazil’s notorious President, Jair Bolsonaro, has been invited to India’s Republic Day parade by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Authoritarian nationalism is on the rise across the globe and anti-democratic leaders are now at the helm of the world’s biggest democracies, including India and Brazil, as well, of course, as the USA. This is bad news for everyone, but minorities are particularly at risk as these demagogues claim that “their” rights must be sacrificed for ...

Brazil to Open Indigenous Reserves to Mining Without Indigenous Consent

BY: Sue Branford & Maurício Torres, Mongabay An industrial mining operation in Brazil. Note the forest at the edge of the open pit mine. For many years, international and Brazilian mining companies have dreamed of getting access to the mineral wealth lying beneath indigenous lands. And finally, the government of Jair Bolsonaro seems determined to give them that opportunity. On 4 March, while Brazilians were distracted by Carnival celebrations, the new Minister of Mines and Energy Admiral Bento Albuquerque announced plans to permit mining on indigenous land. Speaking at the annual convention of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), a major event in the mining world that attracts tens-of-thousands of attendees, the Minister said that Brazil’s ind...

From climate change to regime change

From Brazil to Bolivia and Venezuela: how the environment has become a tool of coercion. Proletarian writers Evo Morales joined firefighters in burned forest in Santa Rosa, Boliva, August 2019. Since this article was written, the legitimate president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, has been overthrown in a US-sponsored coup. The huge profits to be made from Bolivia’s massive reserves of lithium (essential in the production of electric cars) are just one of the factors being pointed to by commentators seeking to explain imperialism’s desire to replace Evo Morales’s popular government with one under their control. ***** Throughout August and early September, fires ravaged large parts of the Amazon rainforest, affecting the nations of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru. ...

As Lula Emerges From Prison, US Media Ignore How Washington Helped Put Him There

by: Brian Mier Former President of Brazil Lula da Silva speaking in front of the Metalworkers union on November 9, 2019, after his release from prison. (Photo: Brian Mier) The Brazilian Supreme Court reversed a 2018 ruling on November 7, upholding the principle of innocent until proven guilty in the 1988 Constitution and declaring it illegal to jail defendants before their appeals processes have been exhausted. Within 24 hours, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was released to an adoring crowd of hundreds of union members and social movement activists who had maintained a camp outside the police station where he was held, shouting “good morning,” “good afternoon” and “good night” to him for 580 consecutive days The New York Times (8/25/17) depicted Judge Sérgio Moro a...

Washington’s Consensus on Neofascist Coups in Latin America

by; PAUL STREET A clash between pro-Zelaya protesters and the Honduran military. Photograph Source: Roberto Breve – CC BY-SA 2.0 However much they war on the domestic political front, Washington’s Democrats and Republicans are on the same page when it comes to the imperial war on democracy and social justice in Latin America. No Partisan Warfare on Honduras (2009) In 2009 and 2010 Republicans were in a partisan tizzy over everything Barack Obama and Democratic Party, from health insurance reform to economic stimulus, bank bailouts, auto bailouts, and climate policy. The “Tea Party” rebellion arose, replete with a heavy dose of white herrenvolk racism. But the Teapublicans offered no complaint when Obama’s Secretary of State Hilary Clinton aided and abetted a right-w...

Lula is Free: Can Socialism Be Restored?

by ANA PAULA VARGAS – VIJAY PRASHAD Just before 5 p.m. on Friday the 8th of November, Brazil’s former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva walked out of his prison in Curitiba, Brazil. Lula went to prison in April last year on a 12-year sentence. Five-hundred and eighty days of prison are now over, as the Federal Supreme Court ruled that inmates who have not yet exhausted their appeals should not be held in prison. In addition to Lula, about 5,000 Brazilians—mostly poor and black—can be released based on the Supreme Court’s decision. Many of them have not been previously afforded the presumption of innocence, and large numbers of them have been in prison without proper legal defense. The Supreme Court verdict ...

Lula Free, Bolsonaro in Rage

By Danica Jorden A ruling by the Constitutional Court provisionally released Lula. An important part of the Brazilian people welcomed the news with joy and hope. But Bolsonaro reacted with rage and called him “guilty scum”. *** Last Friday, November 8, 2019, former President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva walked out of a prison in Curitiba and was greeted by throngs of supporters, many of whom had camped out since he was sent to jail more than a year and a half ago. The next day, hoarse from the ordeal and past throat cancer surgery, Lula spoke for 45 minutes before thousands gathered in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, Brazil’s automotive capital and the heart of labor activity in the country. It was a sea of red, as many wore the crimson t-shirts of th...

Brazil Dam Collapse Is a Human Rights Disaster and Crime

Protesters rally in solidarity with the victims of the Brumadinho dam collapse in downtown Sao Paulo, Brazil, February 1, 2019. Such disasters symbolize capitalism's failure to secure basic human rights and environmental protections in Brazil. BYCaitlin Schroering,  Truthout R On January 25, a dam at Córrego do Feijão in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, Brazil, collapsed. At least 300 people have been killed, buried alive in mud. To date, 179 bodies have been identified. It is expected that this number will continue to grow, representing a horrific human rights and environmental catastrophe. The collapse is, according to many, no accident. The owner of the dam is the Brazil-based transnational corporation Vale, which holds the status of being the globe’s largest produ...

Unified Action to Fight Deforestation

The Amazon is burning and global deforestation accelerating - we need unified international action. By Nicole Polsterer Global Research, Jair Bolsonaro defied his critics at the UN General Assembly in New York this month – as expected – denouncing those maintaining that his policies have fanned the flames of the Amazon fires. Brazil’s President declared: “We all know that all countries have problems. The sensationalist attacks we have suffered due to fire outbreaks have aroused our patriotic sentiment.” This echoed his repeated claim that the fires in the world’s largest tropical rainforest were being used as an “excuse” to attack his government by countries who want to “control” the Amazon and get their hands on its riches, and that ...
