NOVANEWS July 31, 2010 Here's a little chunk of a Robert Fisk article from today's Independent: an extraordinary – almost obscenely beautiful – financial arrangement in "Palestine". The EU funds millions of pounds' worth of projects in Gaza. These are regularly destroyed by Israel's American-made weaponry. So it goes like this. European taxpayers fork out for the projects. US taxpayers fork out for the weapons which Israel uses to destroy them. Then EU taxpayers fork out for the whole lot to be rebuilt. And then US taxpayers... Well, you've got the point. NOVANEWS Randomly, from Ma’an News: the Hamas government in Gaza banned displaying lingerie or pajamas in the windows of stores. It also banned fitting rooms inside those stores or using tinted glass for their windows. This comes shortly after the government banned smoking sheesha for women in public. The Fateh government in Ramallah meanwhile prevents the issuance of new passports for many of the people living in the Gaza Strip, sometimes because they are affiliated with Hamas, sometimes because someone says they are affiliated with Hamas when they are not, and sometimes just because of general administrative logjams. NOVANEWS Even though President Obama promised BP will cover 100% of the cost of repairing and cleaning up the Gulf Oil Disaster, the Wall Street Journal reports that BP will force taxpayers to pick up at least $9.9 billion of the bill. How will this happen? BP is planning to use tax-code provisions that allow companies to get refunds on losses. Since the disaster will cost BP at least $32 billion, they want almost $10 billion dollars from taxpayers -- effectively cutting BP clean-up costs by a third. This is unacceptable. The good news is getting BP to drop their claim is a fight we can win. Just this year, public pressure got J.P. Morgan Chase to drop its plan to claim $1.4 billion in tax credits after receiving $25 billion of bailout money. And Goldman Sachs Group agreed not to claim $18...

NOVANEWS Why are the British and US governments saying the leak of military documents about Afghanistan has "put our soldiers at risk?" It's us who's been kept hidden from this information, not the Taliban. For example, many of the revelations are previously hidden details of civilian casualties, but Afghans in those areas probably already knew about those deaths.
