YOU KNOW FINKELSTEIN INTERESTED IN PALESTINE

NOVANEWS There's a lot to say and get pissed off about in Jamie Stern-Weiner's recent interview with Norman Finkelstein. Some of it will definitely be taken up by others. Finkelstein no longer strikes me as very radical, nor does he strike me anymore as very thoughtful, or, better, reflective. His concern for Palestine has always had a diamond-hard outrage at its core, but it is also aging into a resigned pragmatism. His prose and his thinking both lately have these machinic cadences, and I wonder where the man is who called Hezbollah heroes for fending off the Israeli army, and captivated me into caring about this conflict on a more intense level with his own intense moral clarity and his harsh Spartan judgments, "incensed that history should even have versions." Jamie asks and NF answers...

PALESTINIANS DON'T NEED ZIONIST TUTEIAGE WITH NONVOILENT PROTEST

NOVANEWS by Ofer Neiman A popular colloquial expression in Hebrew regards the futility of “selling ice to an Eskimo”. Perhaps the New York Times’ Nicholas Kristof should take note. In a recent blog entry, Kristof wrote that “Israeli civil society promotes democratic values in Palestinian communities”, and that “…the weekly Sheikh Jarrah protests in East Jerusalem, in which Israeli Jews play a major role, offer a useful model of peaceful protest”. Unfortunately, Kristof presents a patronizing and misinformed view of the history of the Palestinian struggle against Israel’s policies of land grab and occupation. It is true that some Palestinians, especially former prisoners who have risen to leadership roles, openly state that they have learned a lot about Israeli society during their impriso...

THE HYPOCRISY OF PREACHING NONVIOLENCE TO PALESTINIANS

NOVANEWS http://www.commondreams.org/view/2010/07/12-0 Published on Monday, July 12, 2010 by CommonDreams.org by Ira Chernus Nicholas Kristof is in Palestine, though like all mass media journalists he calls it "the West Bank." He has just discovered that many Palestinians are resisting the Israeli occupation nonviolently, though scholars of nonviolence started writing about the Palestinian resistance over 20 years ago. So Kristof is "waiting for Gandhi," as the title of his latest New York Times column puts it, or at least a "Palestinian version of Martin Luther King Jr." Perhaps I should not be so cynical. Kristof has gained fame as a crusader for human rights, especially women's rights. Now he's taking a real risk by advocating for Palestinian rights and praising Palestinian resistanc...

NOCTURNAL ZIONIST TERROR IN SILWAN

NOVANEWS Ed’s note: Here is a story that ran earleir this week in Just Jerusalem. We are reposting it here in advance of an interview with the author, Daniel Dukarevich with additional actions expected this weekend. Silwan protest against settlements Another night sets in on Silwan. Just two days ago, hundreds of Israeli and Palestinian demonstrators marched together along the narrow streets of the neighborhood, to support the local residents, facing the municipality’s plan to demolish 22 houses. But here, as anywhere in east Jerusalem, happenings do not cease for a moment. In previous weeks, more and more appeals to the solidarity activists of Sheikh Jarrah  came in from the residents of Silwan. In view of our successful campaign, more and more Palestinians have been trying to find a...

VETERANS TODAY: LIFT THE ZIO=NAZI BLOCKADE OF GAZA NOW!

NOVANEWS Amnesty International is deeply concerned that it appears that Israeli armed forces may have used excessive force the morning of May 31, 2010 when entering boats protesting the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip. Israel’s military blockade of Gaza has left more than 1.4 million Palestinian men, women and children trapped in the Gaza Strip. Mass unemployment, extreme poverty and food price rises caused by shortages have left four in five Gazans dependent on humanitarian aid. As a form of collective punishment, Israel’s continuing blockade of Gaza is a flagrant violation of international law. Petition Text Lift the Blockade of Gaza Greetings, I am writing on behalf of Amnesty International USA with deep concern about the killing by Israeli armed forces of nine activists on ships pro...

FARMING IN THE BUFFER ZONE

NOVANEWS Rada confirms--insists--that she is from Montenegro, not Serbia. The farm is east of Khan Younis, in Khoza'a, or Abasan Kabeera, depending on who you ask--not "Bani Salah." ISM are not "human shields," and his name is Abu Ta'ima, not Abu Tahma. But still good work. (I was doing research or something.) ZIONIST COLONIAL PROJECT

NOVANEWS “Perhaps, the best chance of unwinding the Zionist colonial project lies with the Jews themselves. Only when liberal segments of the Jewish diaspora are convinced that Zionism endangers Jewish lives, only when they act to countervail the power of the Jewish lobby in leading Western societies, will Israel finally be moved to dismantled its apartheid regime.” [item 6, below, M. Shahid Alam, “Israel: a Failing Colonial Project? “] ================================================= Good evening dear friends, Just 6 items in this message. I begin with the quote above, because it reflects something that I believe and have been saying for quite some time—one of the best chances of the Zionist colonial project collapsing is when Jews lose interest in it, or become so disgusted with Israel’...

NAZI'S DESTROYING HOMES IN RAFAH

NOVANEWS destroying homes in Rafah  The story isn't hyped. PCHR added that the government in Gaza should not be destroying private homes while there is such a pronounced dearth of housing in Gaza, with some people still living in tents, 17 months after the end of the massacre, and others crowded in with extended family. What happens when you refuse a governing group the fiscal resources to govern, throw half its senior leadership in prison, and attack them mercilessly? It exacerbates thuggish and chauvinistic tendencies. That explains many things. But not destroying people's homes when they can't rebuild them. That's intolerable.  Technorati Tags: Gaza, Hamas, Israel, Palestine, resistance movementsRelated posts: who will protect the Rachel Corrie? As I write the Rachel Corrie, a 1200-t...

TWO STATE HYPOCRISY

NOVANEWS By: Daniel Mcgowar Historical Palestine (or Israel within the borders it now controls including pre-1967 Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, and the Golan Heights) is one country with one water system, one electrical grid, one powerful military to defend and define its external borders, one monetary system, one telephone system, and one postal system.  It is already one state, although half the population has lesser rights or none at all. The current argument for creating two states is simply another attempt to carve out a Jewish state, called Israel, where Jews have by law superior rights to non-Jews.  It involves ethnic cleansing, segregation, and racism; it is definitely not a formula for lasting peace. American support of a racist, apartheid state is contrary to what we Americans pro...

METHODISTS VOTE TO BOYCOOT ZIONISM

NOVANEWS July 10, 2010 by Michael Leon   Zio=Nazi soldier pointing his weapon at a Palestinian child. 'Stop,' demands the Methodist Church The Methodist Church moves for peace against Israeli terror state. By Marcus Dysch and Simon Rocker The Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks, led condemnation of the Methodist Church for its approval of a report on Israel which he warned would have widespread repercussions for interfaith relations. The Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council said the Methodists’ annual conference should “hang its head in shame” for passing a policy which calls for a boycott of goods from “illegal” Israeli West Bank settlements and blames Israeli occupation as the “key hindrance” to Middle East peace. Lord Sacks said the implications of the decision would “reverberate ac...
