NOVANEWS Dear Friends, I apologize for saying yesterday that I was including Peter Beinart’s article and didn’t. It is item 1 below. Essentially he says what Amira Hass said several days ago and what I have said: the solution to the problem is make life better for the Palestinians in Gaza, that is, to give the people hope.  That, at least, is part of the solution.  Beinart correctly notes that “Unfortunately, as effective as Benjamin Netanyahu has been at destroying Palestinian rockets, he’s been even more effective at destroying hope and strengthening despair.”  True, but this is part and parcel of Netanyahu’s and his government’s policy. Dear Friends,       For a change only 6 items tonight, though  2 of them (2 and 3) do contain various statistics and reports.  There were additional items, but I think that the 6 below are the more interesting or informative ones. All my recent posts have been about Gaza, and the same holds for most articles in the local press, as well as TV and radio news.  But things are also happening in Israel and the West Bank.  Item 1 reveals some of what has been happening among Palestinian citizens of Israel, namely police harassment.  Not very pretty.  Surely not typical of a democracy.  But then, who says that Israel is a democracy? NOVANEWS Dear Friends, 7 items below.  I had honestly not intended to send more than 4 or 5.  But some days items turn up that one can’t anticipate and that must be read. Item 1 is one such!  What nerve!  The Palestinians don’t suffer enough! No, they have to also endure Israeli Occupation Forces training in Palestinian villages!  Imagine! In item 2 Rabbi Arik Asherman comments on the Begin-Prawer plan, seeing it as a means of stirring hatred between Israeli Jews and Bedouin citizens of Israel.  Indeed, the bill must be stopped, but it is unlikely that this will happen.  Israel is not a wolf in sheep’s clothing.  It is a wolf inside and outside, devouring everything Palestinian possible! NOVANEWS   Dear Friends, Israel cannot compete with Syria nor with Ed Snowden, the latest whistle-blower, and so there are only 4 items today.  That should give you time to read Today in Palestine, where you learn about what is happening on the ground here in quite some detail. Israeli newspapers and last night’s news programs all carried articles on Yoram Kaniuk, a well known Israeli author who died two days ago.  The most informative article is the BBC one below.  Interesting that the 2 Israeli articles on him (the links below) stressed his disappointment with what Israel has become. NOVANEWS Dear friends, Just 5 items tonight—the initial 3 are on incidents of Israeli racism—the first with respect to refugees, the 2nd with respect to airport harassment, the third with reference to a law to disposes the Bedoin farmers and husbandmen in the Negev of their villages and land. NOVANEWS   Dear Friends, So here I am, back again.  Unfortunately, I can’t say that anything has improved here during my absence, and therefore, I can almost certainly promise you more of the same as before.  The situation continues to exist, though some details might be different. Of the 10 items below, I included the first only to comment on it, an editorial that infuriated me.  If all that the military learns from a CO is to “refuse to accept someone who does not want to be a member” it has learned nothing.  People after all have a right to conscience. NOVANEWS   Dear Friends, I had about 12 or 13 items for you tonight.  But since a goodly portion of them are on Israeli racism, have decided to save the others for tomorrow or another time and to send 6 items tonight—the first 5 on the subject of Israeli racism, which becomes more and more rampant.  Item 5, from the Spiegel, is a long article on the subject—the article is a bit old, but is entirely relevant.  I disagree with its main reason for racism in Israel—fear.  Not that fear is entirely absent, but even it, to whatever extent it exists, results from the fact that Israel is a “Jewish state.”  Any country that grounds itself on a single race or religion, or ethnicity, or any one of anything else is bound to dislike the ‘other.’  And in such a country, when ‘outsiders’ threaten t...

NOVANEWS Dear Friends, Just 4 items below.  A few more might follow later, especially Today in Palestine, if there will be one today for June 1 or 2.  For the present, these will have to do, as I might not have time later for intensive reading and writing. Item 1 touches on the issue of democratic and Jewish—a country can be one or the other but not both.  More and more articles are appearing on this subject.  About time!  Any country grounded on an ethnicity, race, or religion cannot be democratic.  It will always be demographic by virtue of wishing to consist of only 1 kind of people. NOVANEWS I believe that this is an important article—not that it will deter Netanyahu from screaming that Iran is a threat to Israel, nor Obama from more sanctions, but it does furnish data that is available in bits and pieces from other articles on the subject of Iran pursuing or not pursuing the bomb.  May we all (Iranians and Israelis especially) be spared a military strike on Iran.
