JEN MARLOWE: ONE FAMILY IN GAZA

NOVANEWS January 7, 2011     Gilad Atzmon   Just months after the Israeli assault that killed 1,390 Palestinians, I visited Gaza. Among dozens of painful stories I heard, one family stood out. I spent several days with Kamal and Wafaa Awajah, playing with their children, sleeping in the tent they were living in, and filming their story. Wafaa described the execution of their son, Ibrahim. As she spoke, her children played on the rubble of their destroyed home. Kamal talked about struggling to help his kids heal from trauma. What compelled me to tell the Awajah family's story? I was moved not only by their tragedy but by the love for their children in Wafaa and Kamal's every word. Palestinians in Gaza are depicted either as violent terrorists or as helpless victims. The Awajah family chall...

IS GAZA A NAZI CAMP?

NOVANEWS January 4, 2011 Dear friends, Six months after the three-week Israeli assault that killed 1,390 Palestinians, I visited Gaza. I had been to Gaza and to many other war zones numerous times in the past, but never had I left any place feeling as shattered as I did leaving Gaza in August 2009. The feeling, I realized, came from having absorbed the trauma that the people I met in Gaza were still living through. Though I did not intend to make a film, I brought my video camera with me. After all, so few internationals were getting into Gaza--it seemed important to have a means to document what I would see and hear there. Friends met me at the crossing and began to show me some of the places most devastated in the assault. They brought me to an area where families whose homes had been d...

GAZA DIARY, DAY 13: SEEDS OF NEXT INTIFADA?

NOVANEWS   Gaza from a distance is quiet, bestilled, stuck in political stasis—the government quietly accruing power, the population quiescent, the Israeli army engaged in obscured, never-reported incursions in Farraheen, Khoza'a, Abasan, savagely flaying the rural edges of Gaza, squeezing the Strip geographically and, in turn, economically. The buffer zone protests have subsided, or been quashed. For a brief period they were going on frequently, three or even four times a week, or multiple protests simultaneously: in Rafah, Meghazi, Beit Hanoun. But those have mostly stopped, in part because people got so scared after IDF snipers showed how they were prepared to enforce that buffer zone. At quick glance, there seems to be very little organized political protest. But beneath the surface, O...

GAZA YOUTH DEMAND FREEDON

NOVANEWS   2 January 2011 This is an important document and expression of the frustration of secular youth in Gaza. Israeli's disgusting propagandists portray their siege and war as being against Hamas when it is, of course, directed against the civilian population of Gaza. It is a cry of despair and frustration. It says it is against all politics but what it really means are the corrupt and disgusting politics of those who claim to be the Palestinians' protectors but who are interested in advancing their own class and religious agendas. There are many criticisms that can be made of the naivette of the document but what comes across clearly is the outrage and despair of those forced to live their lives in a hot house. Abbas and his fellow quislings encourage Israel to attack the people o...

ASIAN CONVOY COMES TO GAZA

NOVANEWS   Sirens and doors slamming ushered me over to my window; I looked out and saw two big white buses pulling up to the Al-Quds Hotel amidst at least half a dozen police cars and vans, flashing blue and white lights. Quickly grabbed my camera, ran up to my roof to get an aerial shot, then went to go greet the Asian Convoy to Gaza. We only had time to talk with them for a short while—I met a journalist from central India, someone with the right to eat campaign, and several people roughly my age, one of whom had a brother studying at Cornell. Then it was suggested that we let them eat their dinner and go to bed. More tomorrow. Marhaba! WITH DEATH FROM GAZA

NOVANEWS By Mahmoud El-Yousseph January 2, 2011 When you do not distinguish between combatants and unarmed civilians during war, then you deserve to be named a “terrorist.” It makes no difference what your religion is! Yes, even if you are Jewish! That is exactly what happened thousands of miles away and two days before last Christmas, when Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian shepherd in the back and injured two others. A 14 year old suffered a serious head injury and another 19 year old was injured in his hand. The shooting took place in the Northern part of Gaza near the town of Beit Lahia. Israel considered the area a war zone, Palestinians called it home. An Israeli army spokeswoman confirmed the shooting, adding “The soldiers fired warning shot and aimed at the lower body.” Not ...

IN GAZA, THE SCHOOLS ARE DYING TOO

NOVANEWS   Ameer Ahmad in Gaza 10 January 2009 A new word emerged from the carnage in Gaza this week: "scholasticide" – the systematic destruction by Zio=Nazi army of centres of education dear to Palestinian society, as the ministry of education was bombed, the infrastructure of teaching destroyed, and schools across the Gaza strip targeted for attack by the air, sea and ground offensives. "Learn, baby, learn" was a slogan of the black rights movement in America's ghettoes a generation ago, but it also epitomises the idea of education as the central pillar of Palestinian identity – a traditional premium on schooling steeled by occupation, and something the Israelis "cannot abide… and seek to destroy", according to Dr Karma Nabulsi, who teaches politics at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. "We knew b...

GAZA YOM HA'SHOAH

NOVANEWS December 31, 2010 Remembering the future? Very lazy blogging this. I mean lazier than usual. I checked the tag for co-blogger, Gabriel Ash, and saw a post on Mondoweiss's take on Herzl. I went then to Mondoweiss where I saw a cross-post from Max Blumenthal's blog on how some Palestinian women were abused by Israelis as the former were visiting the holocaust circus, Yad Vashem. This week, a group of elderly Palestinian women were escorted to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance musuem to learn about the Jewish genocide in Europe. At the entrance of the museum, they were surrounded by a group of Jewish Israeli youth who recognized them as Arabs. “Sharmouta!” the young Israelis shouted at them again and again, using the Arabic slang term for whores, or sluts.  ...

CRUEL ZIO=NAZI TERRORISM IN GAZA

NOVANEWS   Gaza’s Children   Gaza’s Children   This short video is incredibly moving. It shows the cruel reality of Zionist terrorism. It brings the horrifying numbers of 1300 Palestinians dead, more than 5000 wounded and 40,000 homeless to the reality seen in just these few children who are victims. These horrendous numbers mean that the 1.5 million people of Gaza faced terror that was proportionately a 100 times greater for them than what America suffered from 9-11. The numbers represent real people, real women and children, real victims of Zionist murder. This video also shows incredible courage. The young boy pictured here was helping the wounded when both of his eyes were ripped out from their sockets by Zio+nazi bombs. He survives, but never will see again. While lying in the hospi...
