Milo Is Leaving …. Again

NOVANEWS Adelina Marini We have singled out several topics in today’s press in the countries of the former Yugoslavia – the Serbian-Croatian spy affair, the Serbian-Montenegrin spy affair, Serbia’s EU membership negotiations, and the formation of a Kosovo army. The subject that troubles the region the most, however, is the decision of long-standing Montenegro Prime Minister Milo Đukanović to resign from the post. The news is reported by most media in countries of the region. Croatian Jutarnji list reports in a short article, that Milo Đukanović has proposed last night to the presidency of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS) that Duško Marković be nominated for prime minister. The newspaper reports that the DPS did not explain the motivation for choosing Marković. The s...

Montenegro Wants to Leave the Balkan Autistic World

NOVANEWS Adelina Marini Balkan Media: Orbán’s Referendum Has Failed "Boris and Nicolas Are Redrawing Europe" Croatian-Serbian Relations Cannot Stand Even a Movie The first hearing of a Montenegro Prime Minister in the European Parliament foreign affairs committee transpired with applause and tears. Applauses for the pro-European affiliation of Milo Đukanović, who otherwise has controversial past, as well as present. The tears were for the Montenegro rapporteur in the European Parliament Charles Tannock (ECR, Great Britain), who announced that due to the Brexit he resigns from his rapporteur duties. Several things were noticeable during the hour-long debate with Mr Đukanović. The first one is that it was set up for a very early time of day and was very short, considering the need of ...

Balkan Media: Orbán’s Referendum Has Failed

NOVANEWS Adelina Marini Media in the countries of former Yugoslavia are unanimous – Orbán’s referendum has failed. The subject was covered in the larger countries of the region (Serbia and Croatia), while in the smaller ones it is almost non-existent. Croatian daily newspaper Jutarnji list reports in a headline “An embarrassing defeat for Viktor Orbán”. Almost all Hungarians, who voted in the Sunday referendum, denounced the migrant quotas of the EU, but voter turnout was far below the necessary 50% for the results to be valid. Orbán stated that regardless of that, he will draft a change in the Constitution, so that the referendum’s results are legalised. “As was to be expected, Viktor Orbán did not want to admit the heavy defeat. Immediately after the results came out, Orbán organised a...

“Boris and Nicolas Are Redrawing Europe”

NOVANEWS Adelina Marini, Zagreb This is the headline of a commentary in today’s edition of the Serbian newspaper Politika. Due to the lack of serious regional and internal scandals, many of the large newspapers in the region are dealing today with … European issues. “Will Europe give birth to its Donald Trump following America’s example, or even two of them?”, asks the commentary’s author Zorana Šuvaković. In her opinion, there are many who find parallels between the contender in the French presidential election next year Nicolas Sarkozy and Donald Trump. Even Prime Minister Manuel Valls recently mentioned the Trump-isation of France and the minister of environment made a similar comparison before him. Otherwise media, writes Šuvaković, call Sarkozy “Trump à la française” because of his ...

Is Nationalism Growing in Croatia?

NOVANEWS Adelina Marini A Strong pro-European Party Has Won Elections in Croatia While doing the review of the press in the countries of the former Yugoslavia in the beginning of September, I stumbled into an article in the Serbian newspaperBlic, which quoted the distinguished Balkans expert from the London School of Economics (LSE) James Ker-Lindsay, who believes that Croatia is to blame for the current deteriorated state of relations between Zagreb and Belgrade, depicted by many in the region itself as being worse than in the early 1990s, when the bloody disintegration of the former Yugoslavia began. I shared the text on Twitter, expressing my doubt that Mr Ker-Lindsay said exactly that, knowing that Serbian media should be handled with care. I guessed it was a question of words out...

Croatian-Serbian Relations Cannot Stand Even a Movie

NOVANEWS Adelina Marini The big movie-event of the year in the region is the Croatian film “The Constitution” (original title “Ustav Republike Hrvatske”), the screenplay of which is written by the well-known Croatian writer Ante Tomić and Rajko Grlić. The movie is advertised as “A love story about hatred”. Of course, it deals with the Serbian-Croatian relations, told in the typical for the region comedy movie style. The plot is based on a true story. It reveals Croatian intolerance, prejudice, and hatred for the different, according to the movie’s promo. Before even being shown in the region, the movie has already won the Grand Prix of the Americas for best film at the Montreal World Film Festival. The film’s premiere will be a regional one – Zagreb, Ljubljana, and Belgrade – in the beg...

“We Cannot Wash our Hands with the Migrants”

NOVANEWS Adelina Marini It is the third day after the referendum in the Serbian part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Media in the region have already returned to national subjects, but the referendum is still the subject of commentaries. Croatian media are fully immersed in the official consultations for the formation of a government, which are starting today, the Montenegrin ones are also busy with the upcoming parliamentary elections in October, Serbian ones are focused on domestic issues, as are the Macedonian ones as well. Media in Bosnia and Herzegovina are also busy with the upcoming local elections this Sunday. It is not elections, however, that will be the focus of today’s regional media review. We cannot build a society based on biases and ideologies At the background of expectations...

The Autumn of Referenda*

NOVANEWS Adelina Marini   The previous political season ended with a referendum of large magnitude, which shook the entire European Union, but there are mighty aftershocks and individual local earthquakes expected in the new one, for there are three more referenda coming in seismically active areas for the EU and the Eurozone. And although they look smaller, each of the three has way larger potential to destroy the integrity of the European Union than Brexit.  How much longer can Bosnia and Herzegovina hold? Perhaps the most dangerous one, not just to EU integrity, but also to peace on the continent is the referendum scheduled for September 25th in the Serbian entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina – Republika Srpska (RS). On that day the citizens of RS will be asked to answer the questio...

Serbia Creates Ministries of European Integration and Relations with Eurasian Union

NOVANEWS Adelina Marini Media in Serbia and Croatia this morning are again dealing exclusively with the tension between the two states. The rest of the subjects in today’s press review are the refugee crisis, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Macedonia’s European integration. The most interesting subject today, however, is the information of the Serbian newspaper Danas, which claims there are changes due in Serbian government right before the publishing (at end-October) of this year’s European Commission report on Serbia’s progress towards European membership. It is expected that a ministry of European integration will be created, which is to be led by Jadranka Joksimović, who is currently chief negotiator with the EU on the Serbian side. At the same time, the position of a fifth deputy prime...

Serbia’s Lack of Position Calms the Region Down

NOVANEWS Adelina Marini Serbia’s Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić and President Tomislav Nikolić neither backed Milorad Dodik for the referendum in Republika Srpska (RS) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, nor did they denounce it. This became clear after their meeting yesterday with Serbian authorities in BiH regarding the crisis in the Dayton state, created by RS insisting on holding a referendum which January 9 is to be named with an official holiday. The ambiguous decision of Serbia surprisingly received strong support in the region and gave rise to various, generally positive interpretations. In Croatia, to Jutarnji list the ambiguity is evident. The newspaper reports, that Nikolić and Vučić did not support the referendum, but reminds that they were not in any way willing to exert pressure i...
