What If Hitler Had Ordered the Invasion of Britain?

BY PATRICK COCKBURN Photograph Source: Bundesarchiv, Bild 183-B24543 – CC BY-SA 3.0 de I often think at this time of year about what would have happened if Hitler had ordered the invasion of Britain in the summer of 1940. A reason for my interest is that I live in Canterbury in east Kent; the coast where the German invasion would have taken place between Folkestone and Newhaven is half an hour’s drive to the south. I have often stood on top of the Western and Eastern Heights at Dover looking at the French coast 20 miles away, which is so clearly visible and makes the Channel feel more like a broad river rather than a narrow sea. Another reason for thinking about the non-invasion of 1940 is that Britain was lucky then and I wonder if its luck as a country has deserted ...

Germany’s Super-Rich

BY THOMAS KLIKAUER Beate Heister & Karl Albrecht Jr Portrait Painting Collage By Danor Shtruzman. Photograph Source: Danor Shtruzman – CC BY-SA 4.0 Poverty and wealth remain two sides of the same coin – at times, minted in Germany. Germany’s super-rich own very obscene levels of treasures – mostly thanks to unsavory capitalism, dirty business dealings, white collar crime, and the Nazi past of many of Germany’s businesses. Furnished with all that, Germany’s businesses and its super-rich have even taken on a supermarket-like attitude towards the state, its public goods, its administration, and the government – without the checkout, of course. They have powerful allies in politics, political parties, the state, and federal and state governments. Euro-bill...

Germans Feelings of Zionist Guilt

“After some consideration, the Goethe-Institut decided that Mohammed el-Kurd was not an appropriate speaker for this forum: in previous posts on social media, he had made several comments about Israel in a way the Goethe-Institut does not find acceptable.”This is how the Goethe Institut, a German state-funded cultural association, justified its decision to disinvite prominent Palestinian writer and journalist Mohammed el-Kurd from speaking at its conference "Beyond the Lone Offender".“Appropriate” and “acceptable” are not random here - they reflect a deeply enshrined approach in Germany towards the Palestinian cause. It’s patronising: “We, the Germans, can teach you, the victims, from our comfort zone, what should or should not be said about your oppressor."But it also shows how...

Germany permits the Nazio regime to kill its citizens

Germany permits Israel to kill its citizens with impunity Ali Abunimah The Electronic Intifada  Khadija, Ibrahim Kilani’s sister, holds a photo of her brother and his family who were killed in an Israeli air attack in Gaza on 21 July 2014. Anne Paq Germany is allowing Israel to get away with the killing of six of its citizens in an air attack on a high-rise building in Gaza eight years ago. The country’s federal prosecutor decided not to open a formal investigation into the 21 July 2014 airstrike on the al-Salam tower in Gaza City that killed Ibrahim Kilani, his wife Taghreed and their five children aged 3 to 11. Ibrahim and the children – Elias, Yasser, Yasin, Sawsan and Reem – were all German citizens. They were among more than 2,200 Palestinians, including 550 ch...

A conversation with Palestinian German director Lexi Alexander about Wonder Woman’s promotion of Arab stereotypes, her experiences of racism behind the camera, and the stakes of accurately portraying marginalized communities on screen. Rebecca Pierce A still from Wonder Woman: 1984, in which Gal Gadot saves four Arab children from a rocket attack. Still courtesy of Warner Bros. The much-anticipated Christmas Day release of Wonder Woman: 1984 was met with immediate controversy over its depiction of Arabs and the Middle East. Much of the online criticism of the film centers around its depictions of an Egyptian Emir and an Arab terrorist trying to obtain nuclear weapons, as well as scenes that many viewers felt shared jarring resonances with the violence Pale...

An Artist Not in Uniform: How Walter Richter Defied Nazi Homophobia

BY CHRISTOPH IRMSCHER Walter Richter in his kitchen, Berlin 1940, with permission of Landesarchiv Berlin. In March this year, Trump wannabe Ron DeSantis signed his infamous “Don’t Say Gay” bill, surrounded, for dramatic effect, by a group of young children in neat school uniforms, the kind totalitarian rulers have always adored. Carefully crafted, DeSantis’ photo op was sure to score points with the Fox News faithful, at a time when a record number of anti-GLBTQ measures are making their way through state legislatures. A week or so earlier, a patchily bearded Senator Ted Cruz had mocked fluid gender definitions, a favorite bugbear of the right, when he asked Supreme Court nominee Judge Jackson if she knew what a woman was and then immediately answered th...

Another Raid of Deutsche Bank, Another Dead Whistleblower

BY PAM MARTENS - RUSS MARTENS The Financial Times reported that “Germany’s federal police office, criminal prosecutors and the country’s financial watchdog BaFin raided Deutsche Bank’s headquarters in Frankfurt” last week, according to a statement from prosecutors. The raid comes just four days after the body of Valentin (Val) Broeksmit, 46, was discovered at about 7 a.m. Monday at Woodrow Wilson High School in El Sereno, just outside of Los Angeles. Val Broeksmit was the son of William Broeksmit who was found hanged in his London home on January 26, 2014. The senior Boreksmit was a senior executive at Deutsche Bank involved in assessing risk on the bank’s balance sheet. When Zionist German broadcaster Deutsche Welle fired seven Arab journalists

972magWhen German broadcaster Deutsche Welle fired seven Arab journalists over accusations of antisemitism, many in Germany and abroad took its decision at face value. But a closer look shows that DW's investigation was far from transparent or well-intentioned..The targeted journalists have expressed that the investigation commissioned by DW appears to have been politically motivated and focused on scapegoating Arab and especially Palestinian employees, leaving an environment of fear, distrust, and strict self-censorship when it comes to Israel-Palestine at an already mismanaged and scandal-ridden DW..“The moment they named [Ahmad] Mansour as one of the ‘experts’ in the committee, I thought ‘OK, this is not going to go very well,’” said one of the fired DW employees. “He is a known Is...

Joseph Goebbels: A Guide to Propaganda

“Good propaganda does not need to lie, indeed it may not lie. It has no reason to fear the truth. It is a mistake to believe that the people cannot take the truth. They can. It is only a matter of presenting the truth to people in a way that they will be able to understand. A propaganda that lies proves that it has a bad cause. It cannot be successful in the long run.” It is not only a matter of doing the right thing; the people must understand that the right thing is the right thing. Propaganda includes everything that helps the people to realize this. A good propaganda will always come along that serves a good cause. But propaganda is still necessary if a good cause is to succeed. A good idea does not win simply because it is good. It must be presented properly if it...
