Peace is a Fading Hope in Yemen

BY CHARLES PIERSON Photograph Source: Felton Davis – CC BY 2.0 Hope for peace in Yemen dimmed on October 2 when a truce between a Saudi-led coalition and Yemen’s Houthi rebels expired without being renewed.  The truce had begun in April, was extended in June, and extended again in August. Since 2015, the US has been Saudi Arabia’s silent partner, providing the Saudi-led military coalition (“SLC”) with intelligence and targeting assistance, and (until November 2018) conducting in-flight refueling of coalition aircraft. Yemenis refer to the “Saudi-American war,” or, simply, the “American war.” Biden had promised to end US assistance to the coalition, both on the campaign trail and in his first major foreign policy speech as president o...

Truce in Yemen

Regular readers of Lalkar will be more than aware of the long and inhuman suffering that has been brought down on the people of Yemen since March 2015 when a Saudi-led coalition of imperialism’s puppets launched a merciless ongoing attack to reinstate the regime of Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi which had been ousted by the Yemeni people. Hadi still claimed the title of president in exile until very recently when the Saudis, looking perhaps for an exit strategy, told him to stand down.  The people of Yemen, under the leadership of the popular Ansarullah resistance movement, despite horrifically high losses, have not only hit back at the Saudis and their immediate allies in Yemen but have take the liberation war to the streets of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. On 2 April, 2...

Yemen: Tension Between Pro-Government Forces Flares Up

On Friday, the Islah party threatened to withdraw its representatives from the government in protest against the latest events in Shabwa. Tension between units of the Yemeni government forces flared up on Friday as the newly-formed Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) insisted on removing rebellious security officers from their positions in the oil-rich province of Shabwa. RELATED:Death Toll From Shabwa Clashes Rises to 28 in Yemen "Military leaders affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Islah party mobilized their units in the neighboring province of Marib and began advancing towards Shabwa that witnessed deadly fighting during the past days," said a Yemeni official who asked to remain anonymous. "Areas near Shabwa's borders are still witnessing sporadic f...

Yemen Truce Extension Applauded Amid Demands That US End Support for Saudi-Led War

"Not only was United States involvement in this brutal war unauthorized to begin with, but it is a crucial point of leverage to ensure that the Saudis and their allies remain at the negotiating table these next two months," said one advocate. JULIA CONLEY Anti-war campaigners on Tuesday applauded news that the United Nations-brokered truce in Yemen had been extended for another two months and called on U.S. lawmakers to help ensure more permanent peace by passing the Yemen War Powers Resolution. Both the Saudi-led military coalition, which receives backing from the U.S. government, and...

Peace still elusive as GCC starts Yemen talks in Riyadh

www.gsn-online.com Does the prospect of a ceasefire and another round of talks mean peace might finally break out in Yemen? The UN estimates the conflict has killed more than 400,000 people since 2015, with over two-thirds of the casualties being young children who died of ‘indirect causes’, such as hunger and preventable diseases. Other minors, and their families, have died in bombing raids that have led even staunch western allies (with lucrative economic interests) to question their arms sales to Saudi Arabia. On 16 March GCC secretary-general Nayef Al-Hajraf proposed a ceasefire in Yemen and a new round of talks to be hosted in Riyadh. The Sanaa-based Houthi rebels quickly rejected the proposal, primarily as the Saudi capital was not neutral ground. But despite these cav...

48 Lawmakers Unveil Measure to End ‘Unauthorized’ US Involvement in War on Yemen

"Congress cannot sit by and allow the United States' complicity in the worst humanitarian crisis in the world to continue," said Rep. Pramila Jayapal. JESSICA CORBETT Four dozen U.S. House lawmakers on Wednesday introduced a War Powers Resolution to end "unauthorized" United States military involvement in a Saudi-led coalition's war on Yemen. "We should not be involved in yet another conflict in the Middle East—especially a brutal war that has created the world's largest humanitarian crisis." The bipartisan House effort is led by Reps. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.). Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will introduce a companion version when the Senate reconvenes, according to the Congressional Prog...

A Ceasefire in Yemen After Seven Years: Are US-Backed Saudi/Emirati Aggression and War Crimes Finally Over?

by Doug Bandow  As Russia’s war against Ukraine rages, there is hope that the even deadlier war in Yemen might finally end. The warring parties have agreed to a ceasefire which, unlike previous pacts, so far has held. This is surprisingly good news, most importantly for the Yemeni people, but also for America’s international reputation. Even as Russia faced global censure for its unjustified aggression against Ukraine and brutal attack on Ukrainian cities, the US and other Western governments continued to back the deadlier Saudi and Emirati campaign against their impoverished neighbor. Despite Washington’s support for the wealthy Gulf monarchies, they were unexpectedly bested by an indigenous Yemeni insurgency led by the group Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis. Although ...

The National Interest Whitewashes Saudi Aggression in Yemen

BY CHARLES PIERSON Photograph Source: Felton Davis – CC BY 2.0 The National Interest has published a shameless apology for Saudi Arabia’s genocidal war in Yemen, “The Saudi War of Necessity in Yemen” by Ahmed al-Maimouni. With his second sentence, Al-Maimouni, a retired Saudi major general, forfeits his right to be taken seriously: “It is imperative for Saudi Arabia to preserve peace in Yemen….”  What peace?  Yemen has been at war since 2015 and the reason is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  In 2015, an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia attacked Yemen without provocation.  Since then, 150,000 Yemenis have died, most of them at the hands of the Saudi coalition. General al-Maimouni serves up another whopper in his very next sen...

Biden Promised to Stop Supporting Saudi Aggression in Yemen. He Lied

Posted by: Sammi Ibrahem, Jr Photograph Source: Felton Davis – CC BY 2.0 BY CHARLES PIERSON According to an article on Middle East Eye on March 28: “last August, Saudi Arabia and Russia signed a military cooperation deal viewed as an affront to the US, whose failure to support Riyadh’s war on Yemen is closely related to the kingdom’s decision to balance the scales by engaging Russia” (emphasis added). This is yet another journalist who has been taken in by Biden’s February 4, 2021 promise to end US support for “offensive operations” in Yemen.  Biden has done no such thing.  At most, Biden has merely reduced US support for the bloodbath that Yemenis call the “Saudi-American war.”  Far from ending US support for the Saudi-UAE...
