PUNJAB: POLICE ONSLAUGHT ON ACTIVISTS

NOVANEWS by Narinder Kumar Jeet Punjab - Democratic mobilization resists police onslaught on activists Rajeesh | August 2, 2010 | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: http://wp.me/pglpM-1RE Source: Sanhati August 01, 2010 Now-a-days, the Punjab Police is too much pre-occupied with Naxalite-phobia. Some months ago the DGP himself came out with an extremely irresponsible statement, branding the 17 mass organizations of farmers and agri-labour as front organizations of the Naxalites/Maoists, because they have been consistently fighting against the anti-people and anti-national policies of the rulers. The police arrested Surjit Singh Phul, President of Bharti Kisan Union (Krantikari), subjected him to severe torture at the Joint Interrogation Center Amritsar and slapped on him a case unde...

GATES: SMALL 2011 TROOP PULLOUT FROM AFGHANISTAN

NOVANEWS By Anne Gearan WASHINGTON – Defense Secretary Robert Gates is predicting that only a small number of U.S. forces will come home from Afghanistan when a presidentially mandated withdrawal begins a year from now. Gates reaffirms that a withdrawal will begin in July 2011. He says he thinks the initial pullout will be modest, and that a large number of U.S. forces will remain in Afghanistan. The Pentagon chief says the pace of the withdrawal would pick up as security conditions improve. The U.S. will have more than 100,000 troops in Afghanistan by the end of this summer. The plan is to begin bringing them home next July, with the scope of the pullout to be determined by security conditions then. Gates was interviewed for ABC’s “This Week.”

JULY DEADLIEST MONTH FOR IRAQIS SINCE 2008

By Sameer N. Yacoub BAGHDAD – July was Iraq’s deadliest month in more than two years, according to new official figures, suggesting that a resilient insurgency is successfully taking advantage of a months long deadlock in forming a new government. The figures released late Saturday show that 535 people were killed last month, the highest since May 2008 when 563 were killed, heightening concerns over Iraq’s precarious security situation even as the U.S. troops are reducing their numbers. Iraq has been mired in a political deadlock for nearly five months since a March parliamentary election failed to produce a clear winner. The political impasse further deepened this weekend, when a Shiite bloc nominally allied with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s coalition publicly announced its rejection ...

A winding dirt-track leads to the forest hamlet, interrupted by ponds and ditches. It's Parkota, a village that has not seen electricity. This is the birthplace of Sidhu Soren alias Bhuta Baskey the topmost Maoist leader to have been killed in Bengal. On Tuesday morning, a police team from Lalgarh turned up at his mud hut when the Baskey family was busy with their usual chores. A constable handed out a message written in English to the dead rebel's father Jamadar Baskey and left. Jamadar took it as yet another "police paper" that he...
