RUSSIA: IRAN'S NUCLEAR PLANT TO START NEXT WEEK

NOVANEWS August 13, 2010  by Michael Leon   photo released by the semi-official Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), the reactor building of Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant By Vladimir Isachenkov MOSCOW – Russia’s nuclear agency said Friday that it will load fuel into Iran’s first nuclear power plant next week, defying U.S. calls to hold off the start of the launch. Rosatom spokesman Sergei Novikov said Friday that uranium fuel shipped by Russia will be loaded into the Bushehr reactor on Aug. 21, beginning the startup process. “From that moment the Bushehr plant will be officially considered a nuclear-energy installation,” he told The Associated Press. The United States has called for Russia to delay the startup until Iran proves that it’s not developing nuclear weapons. Russian offici...

IN REALITY WE LOST THE AFGHANISTAN WAR

NOVANEWS We ‘lost’ the Afghanistan War: See reality and start talking August 10, 2010  by Michael Leon   The NATO alliance is failing to win over Afghan civilians, a cornerstone of success in the current strategy employed in Afghanistan. In the two provinces currently at the center of the war — Helmand and Kandahar — 75 percent of Afghans believe foreigners disrespect their religion and traditions; 74 percent think working for foreign forces is wrong; 68 percent believe NATO will not protect them; and 65 percent think Taliban leader Mullah Muhammad Omar should be part of the government. - By Conn Hallinan in Foreign Policy in Focus Wars are rarely lost in a single encounter; Defeat is almost always more complex than that. The United States and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NA...

THE LUNATIC'S MANUAL IN AFGHANISTAN

NOVANEWS August 11, 2010  by Michael Leon - Given the current trend of things in Afghanistan, if President Obama and SecDef Gates are really serious about reclaiming “efficiencies” in defense spending, maybe they ought to think a little harder about the billions spent every month in that country, not to mention the wisdom of retaining 50,000 U.S. troops in Iraq. Sven Ortmann  appropriately quotes Winston Churchill: “The Americans will always do the right thing … after they’ve exhausted all the alternatives.” - By Jason Sigger in Crooks and Liars Bob Herbert at the NY Times had an impassioned op-ed last week on the insanity of our forces staying in Afghanistan even as all indications note that we’re not making any progress in that country. He calls it “reading from a lunatic’s manual.”...

IS PAKISTAN FLOOD OBAMA'S KATRINA ?

NOVANEWS Obama’s Pakistan Katrina? Helicopters for War, But Not Flood Relief August 12, 2010  by Michael Leon   Pakistan Flooding - - A “political decision in Washington” means a decision by President Obama. That senior U.S. military official is exactly right. The decision to allocate more resources to flood relief isn’t a decision for the military, and it would be absurd to blame the military for whatever decisions are made, because they are political decisions by the White House. It is difficult to believe the administration does not realize the political ramifications of turning its back on this suffering. The Pakistani people will not forget. - By Robert Naiman “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste,” Rahm Emanuel said, correctly, in November 2008, referring to the economic c...

PAKISTAN FLOODS, RUSSIAN FIRES LINKS

NOVANEWS Frozen jet stream links Pakistan floods, Russian fires August 12, 2010 by Michael Leon     Heatwave in Russia has caused nearly 800 wildfires (Image: Igor Kharitonov/Corbis) By Michael Marshall Raging wildfires in western Russia have reportedly doubled average daily death rates in Moscow. Diluvial rains over northern Pakistan are surging south – the UN reports that 6 million have been affected by the resulting floods. It now seems that these two apparently disconnected events have a common cause. They are linked to the heatwave that killed more than 60 in Japan, and the end of the warm spell in western Europe. The unusual weather in the US and Canada last month also has a similar cause. According to meteorologists monitoring the atmosphere above the northern hemisphere, unusual h...

WE WON'T BE FOOLED AGAIN ON IRAN

NOVANEWS August 11, 2010 by Michael Leon -  We must commit that a strike against Iran by Israel will lead to an immediate repudiation of President Obama and the Democratic Party by the American people. To paraphrase JFK, the American people can not tolerate deliberate deception and offensive threats on the part of any nation or any administration, nor in this case the catastrophic geo-political and economic ramifications caused by the aggression of the outlaw state of Israel. It shall be the policy of the American people to regard any attack launched by the criminal state of Israel against Iran as a political attack by President Obama on the people of the United States, requiring a full retaliatory, political response upon this administration. - - President’s State of the Union Address,...

RUSSIA: STAND AGAINST RAPE

NOVANEWS Dear, A powerful new treaty is our best weapon against the global rape trade in women and girls. If Russia signs it, it will put a major dent in this horror - we urgently need 1 million voices to appeal to Russian PM Putin to sign the treaty and help protect girls like Oxana (above): This powerful appeal just came to us from one of our members: "My daughter Oxana was a beautiful, wonderful girl, gifted in languages. She left our home when she was 20 to take her dream job as a translator in Europe. We were so happy for her. Three weeks later the police told us she died falling from a 5th story window, trying to escape men who fooled her with the job and forced her into a sex club. I died when she died. Now I live only to stop this from happening to other girls. Please, h...

NEGOTIATE WITH MULLAH OMAR & MOVE OUT

NOVANEWS Ex-Pakistan spy chief: Afghanistan war neocon-created ‘lost cause’; Negotiate with Mullah Omar and move out August 9, 2010  by Michael Leon Gen. Hamid Gul, member of Veterans Today Editorial Board of Directors - The attacks of September 11 were a pretext to a war already under consideration, Lt. Gen. Hamid Gul said. “I think some of the neocons, who were very close to President [George W.] Bush, they wanted that he could embark on a universal adventure of Pax Americana, and they thought that the world was lying prostrate in front of them,” he said. The 2001 terrorist attacks helped win the public support for the neocon plans, he said. - From CNN: The U.S.-led war in Afghanistan is a “lost cause,” said a former Pakistani intelligence chief, and the United States needs to nego...
