Why the U.S. dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

NOVANEWS By Ben Becker The following article first appeared in the August 2005 issue of Socialism and Liberation magazine. The 70th anniversaries of the U.S. nuclear bombings of Japan are Aug. 6 and 9 of this year. August 6 and 9 mark the anniversaries of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Numerous historical and personal accounts will emerge in the press, recounting the destructiveness, inhumanity, and long-term misery created by the two U.S. bombs. Nuclear cloud over Nagasaki, August 9, 1945. Photo: Jazz Editions/Gamma Nuclear weaponry, as an indiscriminate killing force responsible for unspeakable atrocities, is truly weaponry of a different type. Many accounts will attribute the horrific bombings to the cruel pragmatism of U.S. generals, or the ignorance of White H...

AUGUST 1945: LET’S TALK ABOUT TERRORISM

NOVANEWS THOMAS L. KNAPP Nagasaki, Japan. September 24, 1945, 6 weeks after the atomic bomb attack on that city, the second atomic blast in history. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)On August 6, 1945, the United States of America became the first — and, to this day, the only — nation to use atomic or nuclear weapons in actual hostilities (as opposed to testing). The unconditional surrender of Japan quickly followed, bringing an end to World War II. For 70 years now, the anniversaries of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings have occasioned debate on whether or not those bombings were necessary, and whether or not they were justifiable. Many World War II veterans  — and others — stand on simple necessity to justify the bombings. A US invasion of Japan’s home islands, they argue, would have entai...

The Atomic Era Turns 70, as Nuclear Hazards Endure

NOVANEWS by JOSEPH MANGANO – JANETTE D. SHERMAN August 6 marks 70 years since the bomber Enola Gay flew over the Japanese city of Hiroshima, with the atomic weapon “Little Boy” aboard. The mission unleashed devastation never witnessed before, changing history forever. Very shortly, a terrifying race to test and stockpile increasingly more powerful nuclear weapons broke out between the United States and Soviet Union. The nuclear component of the Cold War between capitalism and communism raised the question of whether life on the planet could continue. Over 400 bombs were tested in the atmosphere, and tens of thousands of weapons were eventually constructed. The abyss was reached in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Only a last-second political solution by President Kennedy and Premier...

America’s Barbaric Logic of Hiroshima 70 Years On

NOVANEWS By: Finian Cunningham (SCF) : Even if we accept that there was a plausible military imperative to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki – to bring about a swift defeat of Japan and thus an end to the Pacific War – the horror of civilian death toll from those two no-warning aerial attacks places a disturbing question over the supposed ends justifying the means. But what if the official military rationale touted by US President Harry Truman and his administration turns out to be bogus? That is, the real reason for dropping the A-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki 70 years ago on August 6 and 9, 1945, had little to do with defeating imperial Japan and saving the lives of American troops. What if the real reason was the deliberate and cold-blooded demonstration of raw mili...

Japan awakes to being an economic slave colony of the US, approaching revolution

NOVANEWS by Carl Herman Economist Marc Abela explains in the video that Japanese are awakening to the fact that their government serves interests other than those of the Japanese people: Prime Minister Abe works for increasing and ongoing financial support of US unlawful and lie-began wars, including keeping the US military on bases in Japan. Abe works for increased domestic surveillance similar to the US and UK. Japan, as all former imperialist nations, creates what they use for money as debt. These mechanics are like adding negative numbers forever, and cause increasing, unpayable, tragic-comic total debt. Despite Japan’s debt, they are a leading buyer of US debt with $1.2 trillion. Robotics is not leveraged to decrease work time, but used to drive wages down and cause the peop...

Okinawa Governor to Overturn US Military Base Approval

NOVANEWS   Sputnik TOKYO — Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture Governor Takeshi Onaga is expected to revoke his predecessor’s approval for a US military base, local media reported Friday, citing sources. Construction plans for the relocation of Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Futenma to a less populated area in the prefecture are part of a 2006 intergovernmental agreement. In recent months, there have been renewed clashes between the local population and police over environmental concerns and opposition to the US military presence. An advisory panel is due to submit a report to Onaga by the end of July, outlining the flawed nature of the previous governor’s approval, providing grounds for its cancellation, sources told Kyodo news agency. Onaga, governor since December 2014 and former mayor of...

Fukushima’s “Caldrons of Hell”

NOVANEWS More than 300 Tons of Highly Radioactive Water Generated Daily By ENENews Asahi Shimbun, May 1, 2015 (emphasis added): Yauemon Sato, the ninth-generation chief of a sake brewery operating here since 1790 [and president of electric power company Aizu Denryoku] likens the crippled reactors at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant to “caldrons of hell.” In a recent interview with The Asahi Shimbun, Sato said the nuclear disaster “continues to recur every day”… Excerpts from the interview follow: Question: What drives you to be so active, including in the use of renewable energy? — Sato: You know the caldron of hell? You will be sent to hell and will be boiled in that caldron if you do evil. And there are four such caldrons in Fukushima… And the disaster has yet to end. It cont...

Fukushima Disaster Caused at Least 1,232 Fatalities in 2014 as Radiation Death Rate Accelerates

NOVANEWS By David Gutierrez Global Research According to the most recent report, deaths in Japan attributable to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster have continued to increase. Last year, the number of deaths increased by 18 percent over the year before. A March 2011 earthquake and tsunami triggered multiple meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on Japan’s northeast coast, in what has become the worst nuclear disaster in history. A massive radioactive plume was released by the meltdowns, and the crippled plant has continued to leak radiation into the surrounding environment, including into the Pacific Ocean. A total of about 160,000 people were evacuated as a result of the Fukushima disaster. More fatalities on the horizon? According to data collected by the Fuk...

TEPCO Under Fire after Hiding Massive Radioactive Waste Leak at Fukushima for a Full Year

NOVANEWS By Jonathan Benson Global Research   A major bombshell has dropped concerning the failed cleanup efforts at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. The shuttered plant’s operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), has apparently been hiding for an entire year the fact that radioactive waste has been quietly pouring into the ocean from an onsite drainage ditch. Sputnik News reports that TEPCO, which is also managing remediation efforts at the site (with guidance from the Japanese government), concealed from the public the fact that highly contaminated radioactive water has been flowing from the drainage ditch directly into the ocean. Local fishermen and others have since expressed outrage over the news. “I don’t understand why you (TEPCO) kept sile...
