Afghanistan Earthquake

CPIML Liberation is deeply grieved by the news of death and destruction caused by a powerful earthquake in Eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday morning. According to reports, more than 1000 people have been killed in the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck near the city of Khost. The impact of the disaster has been exacerbated by the severe economic crisis the country had been facing since the withdrawal US led occupation forces. Economic sanctions on the new Taliban regime and freezing of Afghan central bank assets, including foreign reserves in the US has led to extreme situations of poverty, hunger and severe shortage of medicines and life-saving medical supplies. We stand with people of Afghanistan in this time of crisis and economic sanctions placed on the country must be withdraw...

US sanctions on Afghanistan could kill more civilians than 20 years of war

US sanctions imposed on Afghanistan are on track to take the lives of more civilians than were killed by 20 years of war. 98% of the population is not getting enough food, according to the UN. ByMark Weisbrot Afghan children in Khost Province (Photo credit: Flickr/funbobseye) (This article was published at the Center for Economic and Policy Research.) Economic sanctions have, in recent years, become one of the most important tools of US foreign policy. There are currently more than 20 countries subjected to various sanctions from the US government. But if more Americans knew how many innocent civilians actually die as a result of these sanctions, would the worst of them be permitted? We may be about to find out in Afghanistan. Sanctions c...

Bhadshah Khan’s Afghan World Peace Movement

Is not the Pashtun amenable to love and reason? He will go with you to hell if you can win his heart, but you cannot force him even to go to heaven – Badshah Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, also known as Bacha Khan or Badshah Khan, and honorably addressed as Fakhr-e-Afghan, was a Pashtun, Indian freedom fighter, independence activist, and founder of the Khudai Khidmatgar resistance movement against British colonial rule in India. by Paul Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Gould If anyone today could name a historical figure connected to the origin of non-violent resistance against political oppression, it would most likely be India’s Mohandas Gandhi. Gandhi virtually defined the idea of non-violent resistance in his struggle to free India from British colonial rule. But in 1929, a...

Al Qaeda Leader Killed In US Drone Strike, Biden Says

Fabio G.C. Carisio Introduction by Fabio Giuseppe Carlo Carisio I relaunch the news of the killing of the Al Qaeda commander as reported by Defense One, a specialized information site very close to the Pentagon because at the moment there is no other information regarding the mission of an American drone in Afghanistan. Within the article I have included multiple links to previous reports that highlight the ambiguous relations between Al Qaeda, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the US. For a broader reflection. by Defense One Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed by a U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan, President Joe Biden said Monday. “We make it clear again tonight that no matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide, if you are a threat to o...

"We should be doing everything in our power to deliver humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people," said the Minnesota Democrat, "not needlessly limiting the aid we can supply." JAKE JOHNSON Rep. Ilhan Omar warned Wednesday that a provision buried in the sprawling National Defense Authorization Act would bar the Pentagon from distributing aid to the people of Afghanistan even as they're engulfed in a massive humanitarian emergency following two decades of deadly U.S. occupation. "Afghanistan is facing one of the most horrific humanitarian crises on the planet," Omar (D-Minn.), a member of t...

As Afghanistan Earthquake Death Toll Rises, US Sanctions Limit International Aid

BY: Amy Goodman, Democracy Now! Amassive 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck southeastern Afghanistan early Wednesday has killed more than 1,000 people, according to local officials, though the death toll is expected to rise. The earthquake comes as the United Nations reports nearly half of Afghanistan’s population already faces acute hunger. Thousands more have been injured and lost their homes along with everything they own. “Many more will be dead, and we are now rushing with aid,” says Jan Egeland, secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council. He says he agrees with the Taliban government that U.S. sanctions on Afghanistan are making it more difficult for aid organizations like his to supply critical resources to Afghans. The Impact of Afghanistan’s Insecurity on Neighborhood, the Region and the World

By: VT Nazar Mohammad Mutmaeen Political Analysts & Writer Note: This article is my personal opinion and has nothing to do with any political party or the policy of the Afghan government. An important article in the peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban (February 29 2020) has been widely debated in the media, and “Afghanistan’s soil will not be used against the security of the United States and its allies.” Important and senior officials of the Islamic State of Afghanistan have repeatedly stated that no country can be threatened from the territory of Afghanistan and no one is allowed on their soil to oppose their neighbors, the region and the world. It was hoped that power would be transferred peacefully to the Taliban and that the international ...

JULIA CONLEYA Condemning the Biden administration's seizure of U.S.-held Afghanistan Central Bank funds as "a deep and grave injustice" that will worsen the humanitarian crisis already being suffered by millions of Afghans, several civil society groups have filed official statements in federal court demanding President Joe Biden's executive order regarding the funds be overturned. ...

Starving a People, Committing a Genocide: Biden’s Sanctions on Afghanistan

BY EVE OTTENBERG Photograph Source: Afghanistan Matters – CC BY 2.0 When the United States stole $7 billion from Afghanistan on February 11, that was no mere crime of robbery. It was a war crime and a crime against humanity that condemns possibly millions of Afghans to starvation. In short, prelude to genocide. Biden prevaricates about his excuse for this outright theft of Afghan funds, namely compensating the 9/11 victims. The Afghan government didn’t kill their loved ones, indeed back in 2001 the Taliban offered to turn the al Qaeda culprits over to Washington. The U.S. refused the offer and invaded instead. Biden’s shocking action makes all Americans complicit in sickening atrocities. According to UNICEF, “more than 23 million Afghans face acute hunger, including 9 mi...

House Progressives Urge Biden to Release Afghan Funds ‘Before It’s Too Late’

"Frozen assets belonging to the Afghan people should be released and used to restore the country's economy," said Rep. Pramila Jayapal. ANDREA GERMANOS Congressional Progressive Caucus chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal on Wednesday urged President Joe Biden to avert further humanitarian catastrophe by swiftly changing course and releasing the $7 billion seized from the Afghanistan central bank last week "The United States is continuing to contribute to a crumbling economy and devastating impacts on the Afghan people." Jayapal's (D-Wash.) call follows Biden's executive order on Friday that would make $3.5 billion of the stolen Afghan assets available for settlements to pay relatives of 9/11 victims. The other half of the total, according to Biden, would be set aside...
