Afghanistan Awaits Uncertain Future After US Withdrawal

BY DEEPAK TRIPATHI Photograph Source: Afghanistan Matters – CC BY 2.0 The recent departure of United States and NATO forces from Bagram Air Base near Kabul is highly significant in advance of the American military pull-out from Afghanistan two decades after an international coalition invaded that country in the wake of al-Qaeda attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. It has been one of America’s longest foreign wars, beginning at the height of the cold war with the Soviet Union in the 1970s, when President Carter began US assistance to anti-Communist Mujahideen. As such, America’s military involvement in Afghanistan is comparable to Vietnam before it withdrew in 1975. More than two million Vietnamese from North and South, and 58 thousand Americans, died in...

Taliban capture more provincial capitals in southern, northern Afghanistan

Amin AlemiPress TV, KabulThe Afghan defense ministry has confirmed the fall of Sheberghan, Kunduz and Sar-e-Pol cities in northern Afghanistan into the hands of the Taliban saying Afghan troops backed by local armed forces have retreated as an attempt to avoid civilian casualties. In the meantime, the defense ministry also says that government troops backed by local armed forces are planning to conduct a large-scale attack on the captured cities to retake them from the Taliban, a move that according to military commanders, needs more time.In such circumstances, locals here look to the ongoing war as unfruitful. They urge the Afghan government, the Taliban and the rest of local players to set aside their differences for the sake of people’s demand which is peace and calm. Man...

Afghan war: after 18 years is there finally an end in sight?

Just as in Vietnam, the mighty USA has spent incalculable blood and treasure trying to enforce its will, and has signally failed. US imperialism slinks out of Afghanistan

As war after war ends in defeat, the much-touted ‘new American century’ is turning out to be the era of imperial decline. Proletarian writers Two decades of invasion and occupation, characterised by brutal bombing campaigns and the use of drone warfare for not-so-targeted assassinations, have led to the destruction of countless lives, huge wealth and most of the country’s infrastructure. Nothing else has been achieved except the hardening of attitudes toward the imperialist invaders and the destruction of the myth of their invincibility. In two decades of imperialist occupation of Afghanistan, the USA has failed in every one of its war aims, all the way down from the hubristic nation-building aspirations of the early years (disavowed now but trumpeted loudly at the...

US Withdrawal from Afghanistan: Changing Priorities of Imperialism

InternationalAishik Saha As the two decades of imperialist war waged by the US on Afghanistan come to a close, millions of Afghans were confronted with a tragic Eid ul-Adha with a bloody ongoing war between the Taliban forces and the Government of Afghanistan and its allied groups. While the end of imperialism should have been cause for celebration and jubilation, most Afghans seem to believe that the US withdrawal has been facilitated by a back-channel understanding between the Taliban and the US administration. The lives of millions of Afghans hang in the balance as many are forced to flee into neighbouring countries as a result of the fighting. Gunar Olsen points out that the US state department maintains a myth that the war in Afghanistan is a ‘good war turned bad’.&nbs...

Nothing happened. They could not even agree on a ceasefire during Eid al-Adha. Worse, there’s no road map for how negotiations might pick up in August. Taliban supreme le...

Biden Tried to Absolve Himself for Afghanistan Aftermath — But He Voted for War

President Joe Biden speaks about the situation in Afghanistan from the East Room of the White House in Washington, D.C., on July 8, 2021. BYWilliam Rivers Pitt, Truthout Former president George W. Bush recently took a break from painting portraits of the wounded soldiers he fed into the maw of dual wars 20 years ago to complain about the end of one of those wars. In a rare interview, given to German news agency Deutsche Welle (DW), Bush had himself a nice little sad about the fact that the Biden administration was finally shutting down U.S. military involvement in the two-decade bottomless pit that was, and will ever be, his Afghanistan conflict. Calling the withdrawal a “mistake,” Bush said, “I think the consequences are going to be unbelievably bad...

SAS commit war crimes in Afghanistan with impunity

Posted by: John Phoenix Australian SAS corners Afghan civilian prior to execution. (AFP) Australia and the United Kingdom have both investigated their elite fighting force, the Special Air Service (SAS) for war crimes in Afghanistan, where they were supposed to be protecting the population. The Brereton Report and the Operation Northmoor investigation, respectively, found substantial evidence of war crimes; a warrior culture and gang-like initiation rituals known as “blooding”, resulting in dozens of dead Afghan civilians. Yet no one has been prosecuted. The Brereton report released in late 2020, documents alleged war crimes committed by Australian Special Forces in Afghanistan. A separate inquiry into war crimes committed there by British Special Forces&n...

Reckoning and Reparations in Afghanistan

By Kathy Kelly Earlier this week, 100 Afghan families from Bamiyan, a rural province of central Afghanistan mainly populated by the Hazara ethnic minority, fled to Kabul. They feared Taliban militants would attack them in Bamiyan.Over the past decade, I’ve gotten to know a grandmother who recalls fleeing Talib fighters in the 1990s, just after learning that her husband had been killed. Then, she was a young widow with five children, and for several agonizing months, two of her sons were missing. I can only imagine the traumatized memories that spurred her to again flee her village today. She is part of the Hazara ethnic minority and hopes to protect her grandchildren. When it comes to inflicting miseries on innocent Afghan people, there’s plenty of blame to be shared. The Taliban hav...

Afghanistan: America’s Longest War Winding Up

By Brig. General Asif H. Raja  When George W. Bush decided to invade Afghanistan to avenge terrorist attacks allegedly masterminded by Osama bin Laden (OBL) and also to ensure homeland security, India offered its full services and tried hard to convince Washington to tackle both Afghanistan and Pakistan simultaneously. Bush Administration ignored the counsel and preferred Pakistan over India because of its remarkable role in the war in Afghanistan against Soviet forces in the 1980s. The other constraining factor was Pakistan’s nuclear capability and delivery means. India was however assured that Pakistan was being taken on board as a tactical partner to achieve short term objectives and subsequently it will be denuclearized and made a compliant state through indirect strategy. ...
