EGYPT ON THE BRINK OF A BLOODBATH

NOVANEWS   For the journalists, the villains are those governments that challenge – or pretend to challenge – Western policies. But for the people, the tyrants are those who exploit and humiliate them. by Thierry Meyssan Egypts unprecedented anti-government protests Image/ Al Jazeera The mainstream media are enthralled by the demonstrations in Egypt and are heralding the advent of a Western-style democracy throughout the Middle East. Thierry Meyssan refutes this interpretation. According to him, antagonistic forces have been set in motion, the outcome of which will turn against the order imposed by the United States in the region. For the past week, western media have echoed reports about the demonstrations and repression rattling major Egyptian cities. They draw a parallel with the eve...

Bookmaker: Odds Favor Mu-Barak Stepping down and Leaving

NOVANEWS   by Michael Leon  The oldest established North American bookmaker, appropriately named Bookmaker.com, has releasedodds on what will happen next to Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak. From Gambling 911 Demonstrations in the Arab world’s most populated nation continued for a [ninth] straight day with calls for Mubarak to step down. Odds on Mubarak resigning were set at even odds.  Good news for the people of Egypt, odds were set at -130 on Mubarak not just stepping down but ultimately leaving the country.  His failure to resign had odds of +130, paying $13 for every $10 bet.  Of the three options, this was the least likely according to the oddsmakers, though it is hardly a “lock”.

Imperial Economics of the Egyptian Revolution

NOVANEWS    by Michael Leon    Pieter Bruegel's Netherlandish Proverbs (The Topsy Turvy World) - Just a matter of time before Americans begin asking what the Egyptian revolution means for them—Americans, the unthinking rabble who matter. Economists are there to deliver the imperialist [and dumbed-down] perspective on the revolution after Americans dig out from a major blizzard and check their betting pools on the Super Bowl. So we can get back to business as usual in case this democracy craze were to cause some inconvenience. For an amusing aside, read President Obama’s remarks which make clear that Mubarak has become a decided inconvenience … to us. President Obama uses the word, “change,” three times. Perhaps readers can be forgiven for not taking that word at face value any more. All...

Zionist Richard Cohen: Egyptian Democracy Is ‘ Aa nightmare’

NOVANEWS   All power to the people day and night - Longtime Washington Post-neocon columnist is terrified of the prospect of Muslims governing their own country. Cohen’s column is the most hilarious notion written on Egypt since reading that Israel is advising the world to refrain from criticizing Mubarak. By Alex Pareene in Salon Nothing saddens Richard Cohen more than the sight of hundreds of thousands of Egyptians peacefully protesting. The longtime Washington Post columnist is sad because those childish Arab Muslims might end up with a democracy, but they don’t know how democracy works. Here is how democracy works: We like it unless “the people” want something that complicates our current foreign policy objectives. For live updates, see Al Jezeera. Cohen is just broken up about this...

The Torture Career of Mu-Barak New Soon-to-be-Ex Vice President

NOVANEWS   Zionist Omar Suleiman Omar Suleiman and the Rendition to Torture   By Stephen Soldz in CounterPunch In response to the mass protests of recent days, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has appointed his first Vice President in his over 30 years rule, intelligence chief Omar Suleiman. When Suleiman was first announced, Aljazeera commentators were describing him as a “distinguished” and “respected ” man. It turns out, however, that he is distinguished for, among other things, his central role in Egyptian torture and in the US rendition to torture program. Further, he is “respected” by US officials for his cooperation with their torture plans, among other initiatives. Katherine Hawkins, an expert on the US’s rendition to torture program, in an email, has sent some critical texts ...

The lion of Judah

NOVANEWS   by Michael Leon   Ben Shahn's (1898-1967) Allegory (1948) depicts The Lion of Judah standing guard over the Jewish victims. Now, Israel has become the tyrant and the people of Egypt and an entire region the new victims, rising up against the Lion, weakened today by Zionist militarism and bigotry. As the Egyptians prepare for gigantic protests to force out the Zionist dictator Mu-Barak, a legacy of neglect, blood, and death will live through the coming centuries. The victims are honored as events unfolding in Egypt have injected in the people the giddy feeling one gets when changing history by standing with brothers and sisters against tyranny. Israhell fears a people refusing to remain victims. One hopes its fears are justified. Now is the time for action, for millions in the...
