Hakim: Peace Needs a Chance

NOVANEWS by Hakim I am grateful that the U.S. officials at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore considered my visa re-application in the light of the surprising write-in campaign on my behalf, and have kindly granted me a U.S. visit visa.Border officials living in today’s fearful world of refugees and asylum seekers fleeing from wars have a tough time.  I empathize with them and know that many do their administrative best to prevent visitors from over-staying in their countries, while being open to the genuine student, visitor or businessman. The human race has a challenge. How do we build face-to-face international relations for peace and justice while understanding immigration concerns? I’ve been privileged to meet the Afghan Peace Volunteers and their families and to have been changed b...

Afghans Protest Execution Of Woman

NOVANEWS By DEB RIECHMANN   KABUL, Afghanistan -- Dozens of men and women took to the streets of Kabul on Wednesday to protest the recent public slaying of an Afghan woman accused of adultery whose gruesome, execution-style killing was captured on video. The footage, which surfaced recently, shows the woman being shot multiple times about 10 days ago in Parwan province, north of the Afghan capital. The gunman was encouraged by people who stood nearby, smiling and cheering. Police in Parwan said the Taliban were behind the killing, but the insurgents have denied they ordered or carried out the slaying. The death of the unidentified woman, who was said to be in her 20s, set off a storm of condemnation. President Hamid Karzai, the U.S. Embassy, the top NATO military commander in ...

Afghan Soldier Shoots Five US Soldiers

NOVANEWS bbc.com An individual wearing Afghan army uniform shot and wounded five Nato soldiers in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, the alliance says. The five, believed to be American, are receiving medical treatment. The extent of their injuries is not known. The attack took place at a Nato base in Wardak province, east of Kabul. It is the latest in a series of so-called “green-on-blue” attacks, where Afghans in the police or army attack international forces. More than 20 foreign personnel have been killed in rogue shootings in Afghanistan this year. On Sunday, three British soldiers were shot and killed by an Afghan policeman as they left a checkpoint in Helmand province, in the south. International forces are gradually handing over responsibility for security to their Afghan counterpa...

7 Racist American troops may face discipline in Koran burning

NOVANEWS   Associated Press WASHINGTON — A U.S. military investigation is recommending that as many as seven U.S. troops face administrative punishments, but not criminal charges, in the burning of Korans at a U.S. base in Afghanistan in February, The Associated Press has learned. U.S. military officials said the classified report and recommendations for disciplinary action against the service members involved were delivered to the Pentagon more than a week ago. They have been turned over to the Army and Navy secretaries. No final decisions have been made. According to the officials, one Navy service member and as many as six Army soldiers could face non-judicial disciplinary actions, which can range from a letter in their file to docking their pay or assigning them additional ...

US declares ‘undeclared’ war with Pak to protect troops in Afghanistan

NOVANEWS   India Daily News and Analysis US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has said the US will do whatever it takes to protect its forces in Afghanistan “Without ever getting into the details of what we may or may not do I think it suffices to say that the United States will do whatever we have to do to protect our forces,” Fox News quoted Panetta, as saying Panetta expressed outright frustration with the Pakistani leadership and the safe havens they provide the Taliban in the Northwest Frontier province, especially the Haqqani network “We cannot continue to tolerate a situation where Haqqanis, terrorists on their side of the border, come across, attack our troops, kill our troops, and then return to a safe haven in Pakistan. That’s intolerable,” Panetta said “You know we h...

“Militants”: media propaganda

NOVANEWS To avoid counting civilian deaths, Obama re-defined "militant" to mean "all military-age males in a strike zone" BY GLENN GREENWALD Virtually every time the U.S. fires a missile from a drone and ends the lives of Muslims, American media outlets dutifully trumpet in headlines that the dead were ”militants” – even though those media outlets literally do not have the slightest idea of who was actually killed. They simply cite always-unnamed “officials” claiming that the dead were “militants.” It’s the most obvious and inexcusable form of rank propaganda: media outlets continuously propagating a vital claim without having the slightest idea if it’s true. This practice continues even though key Obama officials have been caught lying, a term used advisedly, about how many civilian...

The Authoritarian Mind

NOVANEWS Yet another Afghan family (and a bakery in Pakistan) is extinguished by an airstrike: unleash the justifications BY GLENN GREENWALD More than 1,500 Afghans block the highway between Kabul and Kandahar in Seed Abad, Wardak province, Afghanistan, Saturday, May 26, 2012. (Credit: AP/Rahmatullah Nikzad) (updated below – Update II) Yesterday, I wrote about the rotted workings of the Imperial Mind, but today presents a tragic occasion to examine its close, indispensable cousin: the Authoritarian Mind. From CNN today: A suspected NATO airstrike killed eight civilians — including six children — in eastern Afghanistan, a provincial spokesman said. The airstrike took place Saturday night in Paktia province, said Rohullah Samoon, spokesman for the governor of Paktia. He said an entire ...

DRUG-FINANCED SALAFI JIHADISM – The Afghan Drug Trade, A Threat to Russia and US-Russian Relations

NOVANEWS By Prof. Peter Dale Scott   Global Research Preface for a North American Audience I delivered the following remarks at an anti-NATO conference held in Moscow on May 15, 2012. Unlike other speakers, my paper urged Russians -- despite the expansionist and aggressive activities in Central Asia of the CIA, SOCOM, and NATO -- to cooperate under neutral auspices with like-minded Americans, towards dealing with the related crises of Afghan drug production and drug-financed Salafi jihadism.   Since the conference I have continued to reflect intensely on the battered state of U.S.-Russian relations, and my own slightly utopian response to it. Although the speakers at the conference represented many different viewpoints, they tended all to share a deep anxiety about...

Kucinich: “NATO Talks a Sham: War in Afghanistan is Not Ending”

NOVANEWS By Dennis Kucinich Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today released the following statement as world leaders meet in Chicago for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit. “The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is not a benevolent organization. NATO is not about the North Atlantic and it’s not about our collective defense. “NATO is a cost-sharing organization that finances aggressive military action. By hiding behind the claim that the organization provides for ‘common defense,’ NATO allows us to wage wars of choice under the guise of international peacekeeping. The most recent example was the unconstitutional war in Libya where NATO, operating under a United Nations mandate to protect civilians, instead backed one side in a civil war and pursued a policy of r...
